Stereo System?
Anyone know of a good system for an 81?I really don,t want to cut up the dash if I can avoid it.My son wants an amp and subs but I don,t think you would need all that if you had a high power deck.

You're very limited on the standard (2-knob) decks. I have a radio shack brand that only pushes 25 watts per channel. Kenwood makes one that I think is 35 watts per channel. You could always build a custom console and put the stereo there if you want to get a DIN chassis deck. That's an option.

I actually bought some of the premade 6x9 boxes and stuffed them behind the seat facing in. They kinda sit in the cab corners. The only bad thing about that is that your high tones will be muffled behind the seat. But, not much you can do about that. I can take a picture at lunch if you'd like me to.

if you install good 3" (or whatever the dash speakers are) then your highs are ok. if you wanted 6x9s instead of 4x10s in the rear corners, if you are handy you could make some brackets. a sub or two and an amp isnt bad. i like more bass than what a stock radio can put out. but i also like more than just bass.

I really dont see anything wrong with cutting up the dash for a standerd aftermaket cd player as long as its a clean, professional looking cut. Besides, theres nothing really out there now a days that will fit the stock spot.

A nice clean cut in a dash is fine.
And if you are running a sub, you need an amp for that. A small amp for the speakers will not hurt either. I have a deck that puts out 45 X 4 and it does okay, but just does not handle the bass real well at higher volumes. I bought some prefab Truck speaker boxes for 6X9's. The way the boxes are setup, they actually fit where the 6X9 is facing upwards. This helps the muffle sound, but sometimes the highs could blow your ear drums out!

I made a console out of oak and installed a cd player in that. I also install a tack , clock and a mechanical oil guage. I had a tape player in the original stereo hole. I removed that. I went to a u-pull it found the stock am-fm radio that was stock in my truck. Install that.

If you get some nice 3 1/2's up front, be sure to get some bass blockers so they'll last longer and they'll have more of a tweeter effect too.
