UPGRADING a 67 ????
My son is considering a 67 small back window truck, we have a couple we have looked at and considering buying. I know there are some things that are 67 specific. the trucks we have looked at are manual steering & brakes, manual shift and non A/C. how hard and what is all involved in making it power steering, power brakes and A/C (want to look factory)
does the frame have to be altered to install a P/S gear box? what has to be done to swap to P/brakes? can a later year A/C be swapped into a 67? any help is appreciated thanks. Coop

A power steering box will bolt on a 67 frame with no mods and you will need a p/s pump, pulley, lines and a new belt.
Power brakes you would need a brake booster on the master cyl. And yes a later model a/c will fit but you will need to cut 2 holes in the dash |

Re: UPGRADING a 67 ????
Does any of the parts mentioned above have to be 67 specific ? It seems that I have seen in the parts board 67 specific wiring harness for the AC. what about the brake pedal and rod, booster bracket. I have a 72 GMC cab, can I swap the brake pedal, rod and booster bracket from it? it also has the A/C. will parts from it be a "direct" swap ?? Coop

Re: UPGRADING a 67 ????
i have noticed that 67's rarely came optioned with A/C i think out of 100 67 cabs 12 would be A/C......
you can cut the A/C side of the firewall out of a 71 or 72 ( most 71 72 tend to have factory A/C) and weld that on and as for the dash you can drill the holes and you can get all the A/C stuff off a 71 72 |

Re: UPGRADING a 67 ????
A power steering box from a 68 or later will not directly bolt onto a true 67 frame without spacers. Using the spacers can put bump steer into the handling of the truck and not be a lot of fun. That's because the pitman arm will no longer be aligned at the correct angle when you move the box away from the frame.
People have cut the frame and rewelded a recess into it like the 68 and later frames have for the PS box. Have a look at your 72 frame compared to your 67 and you'll see what I'm talking about. Plus it's always good to reinforce the frame itself in the area where the PS box bolts to so that it doesn't crack out later. |

That is incorrect... See 29od1's post for the reasons and mods... I do not agree with his assessment of spacers. I have used them on 2 '67's with no ill effects, except I had to rotate the steering wheel a couple of notches to re-center it... LockDoc

Re: UPGRADING a 67 ????
-i would consider vintage air for your a/c
-the frame can be dent bumped in with a sledge (I heated the dented area with a propane torch to make it easier), just check your alignment after every few hits I did mine in about 5 minutes and there was no frame distortion with alignment - The power steering engine bracket depends on the engine that is in the truck (SBC will be cheaper and easier than the L6) - The brake question has been answered above

Re: UPGRADING a 67 ????
the top of the chassis is wider in 67 trucks cause there wasn't a big block available in 67 so you might have to grind it town to fit your big block headers/manifolds and the firewall is different on 67's compared to 68-72 trucks by the air box. it was made wider in 68 for the big block to fit. I am unsure but not sure if the firewall really makes a difference but the factory did it that way. first pic is 67 firewall and 2nd is 68-72

Re: UPGRADING a 67 ????
I just replaced the factory 283SB in my 67 c10 'Burb with a 454BB. I had to trim the top flange of the frame approx 3/4 of an inch like others have said. Firewall clearance was not a problem while using factory 68-71 BB frame towers and block mounts. To do it over again I would use later model "clamshell" mounts and towers from 72? and later pickup especially if you are not going to run headers. Header clearance may be different with the newer mounts. Just for the record my 'Burb HAD the factory raised bosses on the frame to accomadate a power steering box. No spacers or dimpling required. I realize this is unusual on a '67 and I would not count on them being there.

Re: UPGRADING a 67 ????
67 had a ram-type power steering option. I do not know how plentiful 67's are in junkyards where you are located, but the setup would bolt in with no modification. Just another possibility...
I would also look for a set for a set of 72 mounts. My truck came to me with headers and a big block and the headers cleared Posted via Mobile Device
