QJet Rebuild Kits
Hi ya, its been a while. My 86 may need to have it's Quadrajet rebuilt. What kits have you used or recommend? My mechanic friend will be doing the rebuild, not me. Anyway, I have an 86 C 20 with 350 SBC, 4 bbl, & 400 turbo. Within the last month I started to use premium gas as suggested and it started to run better - no more backfiring or runon. Then recently it started running a little rough like it sounds like it always driving in 2nd gear, yet it shifts okay. Takes a long time for it to warm up without cutting out. Need feedback. im about to attack a rebuild on my 76 17056203 q-jet. so ill be watching this thread. knowing the qjet is one of the most complex carbs im looking for rebuild and tuning pointers. ive always heard them called quadra junk and whatever else but from my research they are one of the greatest designs of all time-just complicted. how can you argue with cfm on command upto mild built big block specs while not having to worry about over-carbing your stock 305, or mild street 355 in my case. i have a 1406 edelbrock and a 600cfm carter afb, but im goin with the q-jet. mine works great but has a gas leak on top of the left front side of it where the accelerator pump(?) rod enters the body.

I just wrapped up my rebuild tonight. I used an Echlin brand kit from Napa (about $48). The other parts I bought in addition to the kit was the plastic secondary cam ($4.95 from ebay), a fuel filter ($2.99), and a float ($12.99). It was a good experience and I learned a lot about how the q-jet works and why it acts the way it does.

how did you decide you needed the secondary cam and float? were they obviously bad parts or a commonly failed part you replaced preventatively?

I got a kit from Cliff Ruggles for about $45 shipped to the door. Supposed to be ethanol resistant parts. The Napa (echlin) kit gave up the ghost after 3 years due to the ethanol.

I took the lazy way out and had the guy that built my motor redo the carb. Two months later, all seems well and I would buy again from him if I needed to. I may buy another kit just to have it around.

I have always used the kits from the local parts store and had good luck. I typically change the float because I am there and most kits are going to come with ethanol resistant seals. You're rarely going to see a carb kit with a leather seal on the accelerator pump anymore.

the kits from cliff are awesome. the "new" SR kit is a great value, and you know you are getting good parts from a man who knows the qjet carb.
i just went back to a qjet on my 82 k5 and used one of his kits, couldn't be happier.
