Anyone ever seen these?

I have a set of chrome cowl panels that i found on a 65 short stepper in a junkyard in Oklahoma. Has anyone ever seen these before? Is there anything special about them or the truck they came off of?

Re: Anyone ever seen these?

I could be wrong but I seem to recall that chrome cowls were "a thing" back in the day and some would remove their cowls and have them chromed but I don't remember if it was ever offered by an aftermarket vendor or by GM. Either way - cool find.

Re: Anyone ever seen these?

This was a very popular if perhaps unattractive "upgrade" back in the mid-late 60's. It started with chrome steps on the stepsides, and migrated to the cowl panels and cowl vents. Mustang and Pontiac guys did the same thing with the rear corner fender extensions and headlight rims that were part of the body structure/styling. Anything that unbolted and fit in the tank got dipped, whether it looked good or stuck out like a sore thumb. After the chrome was neglected long enough to get rusty, the fad died almost overnight.

Haha, Mark is on the money. I always thought this was a totally retarded thing to do, but it sure was popular. Now, the serious cost of chroming things puts a major damper on frivolous bling.

Thanks markeb01, I believe the "sore thumb" comment really applies here, I had them on the truck about 5 years ago and took them off about 3 months after i put them on. They are kind of unique at least to me, as I have never seen another set, but they just seem out of place these trucks.

Re: Anyone ever seen these?

Although I do think I prefer the placement of the badge up on the cowl panel instead of the fender. Anyone have a pic of just the ones on the cowl? Mine did look kind of off double badged on both sides.

Re: Anyone ever seen these?

Somebody knew somebody at a chrome shop and had those done. No one in their right mind would pay to do that..

It would be something to hang on the shop wall and talk about.

Yeah, that's probably will they will live out the rest of their life.
Or, they will be sanded, painted, and placed on the truck. That's only if I decided to lose the fender emblems though.

Re: Anyone ever seen these?

The emblems on the cowl corners is where the factory put them in '62 and '65. The ones in your pic are a '65 emblem.
