New Radiator vs Recore? Source For New? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Have a small leak or two that I want to repair this winter. Would you buy new or just recore? We've got a reputable radiator repair guy here in Columbia. With the recore, I like the peace of mind knowing it will fit right back in there. If new, what do you guys go with?

I went to a radiator shop and bought a new radiator for my truck. A recore would have been more money. I still have the original one...and both are 4-row cores. The new one set me back about $125.

I'll take 5 of those for $125.00 Just bought a new one at a local shop for $325 and that was the cheapest I could find anywhere. Even online. My guess is that is for a rebuilt rad, not new. But I would go new due to age. I also would go with a copper rad and not a plastic one.

I got mine thru AutoZone for $125 back in 2008. Very happy with it. Everything else I got from LMC. The mounts, fan shroud, and new transmission lines. Don't go thru LMC for there radiators... It's like $260 on up to almost $300, but they could be copper instead of plastic ends. Depends on what you are going for as to what you are going to spend. There are a lot of replacement options from many of different vendors and companies.

I would go with a new one.... talk to the seller first to make sure it will fit. I bought my 4-row eight years ago from Auto Radiator Outlet (800-252-0333, no affiliation) p/n 2201VI for $199 shipped, and it was a good fit. No idea what their prices are now, or if they're still in business.

Radiator.com seems to be a popular source, but I've never bought from them.

I'm a fan of new ones also. Who knows where the next hole is going to pop up with a patch job.

O'Reillys one year ago $194.34 out the door. 4 core, all metal tank, fit like original, life time guarantee.

If you go with a recore the only old parts you will have are the tanks. They are most likley thicker than the junk you will buy today. I recore. Any thing old is better than the crap bought today. I trust the guy in town that pays his bills from my work. Not some jerk overseas that hates me.

When my radiator began to leak I was surprised to find that none of the three rad shops that used to exist in town were still in business. Some of them still had online ads, but they had all shut their doors recently.
The Midas guy I asked said there was just no money in repairs any longer.
