66 C10 power steering - rebuild or convert?

Power steering unit on my '66 is leaking terribly. I know there are some options out there to convert to a more modern setup but wanted to check first to see about rebuilding what I have.

If I rebuild, is there a basic kit of seals and necessary stuff to do it?
Where do I find it?
Does it require any special tools or know-how?

Re: 66 C10 power steering - rebuild or convert?

You can get rebuild kits for the control valve and hydraulic cylinder, or you can replace them all together. If you replace them, look for a rebuilt control valve rather than a new valve. The new valves are reproduction and much lower quality than rebuilt originals. Corvette ran the hydraulic assist system up through '87 (I think) and rebuilt valves are fairly easy to come by. I bought a new hydraulic (reproduction) cylinder from Eclkers which is a pretty good quality. I used an Impala cylinder. Nova used a different configuration.

If you convert to a modern set-up, you will need an original center link (drag link). The power assisted system used a different center link with the control valve on the end.

Probably lots of information on this forum as well with a search.
