how to convert A/C from R-12 to 134-A

I have a 1983 silverado, The A/C is cold but not cold enough, I wanted to get it converted so I can add freon myself if I need to, the shop I took it to said they would do it for $100. they told me they just replace 2 O-rings and add a quick connect adapter. I always thought it was a costly repair to do. Does this sound correct?

Yes, it's a costly conversion if done right. For example, the existing condenser should be changed out to a parallel flow type condenser.

Why don't you have it topped off with R12? It shouldn't need very much.

Check on craigslist. Sometimes you can find R12 for a good price.

oil used for r12 is not compatible with r134 so system should be flushed. I use r12 in mine, you can get it on craigslist and ebay
