Power Steering Gear Box Opinions...

Hey Guys

Maybe this should go in a more specific forum, but it relates specifically to our year trucks, so here goes.

I have not had any success finding a used power steering gear box up here. All of the local wreckers crush anything that won't make them a dollar any time soon so...

Looking at a new gearbox, is this quick ratio gear box from Truck Shop a good choice? Any other vendors that offer a quick ratio? Should I stay away from quick ratio?

Interested to hear what everyone has to say...

Oh, and if the Captain could chime in, is this a unit that would work in conjunction with your bracket?

Not sure if they are in your area- but O'Reilly's Auto Parts sells reman steering boxes pretty reasonable. The one I have is a 1973to about 1979, I believe- it has the flare type hose ends, not the o-rings.

Re: Power Steering Gear Box Opinions...

My steering box adapter plates work with all '68-'86 C series and '87-'91 R series, truck style power steering boxes. You do not want a K series steering box as the sector shaft is different that a C series box. Also keep in mind that in 1980 GM went to a Metric with an O-ring style hose fitting. It is helpful to have the steering box and pump with the same style fittings. Also, the '68-'72 uses one pitman arm, and the '73 and up uses a different pitman arm.

I agree with checking with your local auto parts for a new or rebuilt box.
