Rear light requirements

My truck's PO installed the white lenses on the back of my truck. The bulbs are orange or I guess amber. Anyway, when I hit the brakes the orange turns brighter as expected and the turn signals are amber. Is this street legal? I always thought brake lights had to be red?

UMM. Well I'm not sure but what if someone thinks your turn signal is broken and creams you? Maybe get some red leds?

Re: Rear light requirements

Sooner or later, I expect a patrolman will be happy to explain their legal status to you.

Re: Rear light requirements

lenses can be clear just as some brand new cars but there MUST be red reflectors on the rear of the vehicle. A highway patrolman explained it to me with a $65 ticket and I went home and looked it up, he was right.

Re: Rear light requirements

you can replace the amber with red bulbs, they even make red LED bulbs.

I had bright red bulbs in mine when I got a warning and another warning and still when I got a $65 ticket. That was 10 years ago so Im sure the fine has gone up since then The bulb is very important but if you do not have red reflectors on the rear of the vehicle, either built into the lens or mounted seperately you will still get a ticket for faulty equipment. Your state may not care and some other states may strictly enforce it like they do here.

Here are a few examples of OE clear lenses, from the manufacturer, Note they have a red reflector to the side and rear of the vehicle.

Re: Rear light requirements

I get it, I think I will do the small strip of red reflecting tape then. Thanks for the pics as well as the knowledge.
