Suburban/Panel Assembly Plants

Every Suburban I have ever seen was either built in Baltimore or Fremont- "B" and "Z" in the VIN. With the relatively small volume, that may make sense to have production limited to two coastal assembly plants.

Has anyone seen other plants for 60-66 Suburbans or Panels ?

2 Wheel Drive C-10 Series 1400

Total production - 4,834 C1416s (gate)
Total production - 4,685 C1406s (doors)
Total production - 8,228 C1405s (panels)

4 Wheel Drive K-10 Series 1400

Total production - 444 K1406 (doors)
Total production - 443 K1416 (gate)
Total production - 103 K1405 (panels)

this thread got me wondering about my 63. When I checked the title, which I have here, there's NO letter in the vin, except the "K" at the beginning. 6th digit is a "5" . uh- oh! Went to the shop where the truck is, and sure enough, the digit is an "S".
So, to get this straight, so I can eventually register, and pass inspection, and in case I ever sell it, I've gotta fix this!
Here in Mass, all this falls to the State Police. I'll need to get a Statie to come verify the vin, so I can get the title corrected. Spoke with them this afternoon, still waiting to hear back what they want to do now. SNAP! Took me forever in the first place to get this title, I bought the truck in Maine, and Mass is the TOUGHEST RMV on earth!
Plus, when I applied for the title, the lady INSISTED the model CAN'T be a K-10, they didn't exist, even though my paperwork from Maine says it's a K-10. She put the model as a C-10, and I gave up and let her do it!.. I guess, as long as I'm going into battle, I'll try to fix that, as well!

my vin: 3K146 5 14 7012 on the title, 3K146 S 14 7012 on truck (body & frame #'s match)

anyway, long story short, apparently my truck was built in St Louis!

A little update.......after a couple of conversations with the State Police, I was directed to a gentleman who works in the theft area of the insurance industry, to verify this vin (don't know exactly why.....neither did he, he told me what I need is what I asked them for....a trooper to LOOK at the truck vin to verify......)

Anyway, interestingly enough, he said he's been at this a very long time, and the problem of typos with the "S" digit being read as a "5" is fairly common with early Chevrolets. Apparently he's seen it many times with Corvettes....(must be they made a lot of them in St Louis?)......and other models with the "S" in the vin.

Yes - all of the vintage Corvettes were built in St Louis (with the exception of the first 300 1953 models - which were built in Flint Michigan).

So far here is the summary of the possible ’60-’66 C/K 10 Suburban assembly plants for US & Canada. Logic would say that C/K 10 Panels would be the same. Not sure about the 1 ton Panels though.

1 - 1961
C - 2wd
14 - 1/2 ton standard wheelbase
5 - Panel
L - Los Angeles, Ca

I noticed you encountered the agent who said "it can't be a k-10" I had a similar experience in the 90's here in Arizona. Our MVD wasn't going to register my truck because there weren't enough numbers, according to her. Another case of no training.

Years ago I had a 1961 CORVETTE with a "5" on the title instead of the "S". I was able to get them to inspect it and correct the title. Jim
