fuel tank regret

I just bought my 66 c-10, it came with many upgrades: v8, auto, disc brakes, PS, etc. Nice truck, I think I got a great deal. It also came with a rear fuel tank under the bed. It was done with a kit from one of the parts suppliers, all new parts, ... I hate it.

It gets the tank out of the cab, why is this good? I never had any problems with my other trucks in cab tanks. It causes the need for a "Rube Goldberg" type filling system and a hacked bed quarter panel. The spare tire is now relegated to inside the bed rather than under the bed. In my mind it has many negatives.

So why complain about it to you guys? Well, I am thinking of putting it back to stock. I need you guys opinions about it. Am I crazy as this would be a lot of work and cost. Maybe one of you guys would want to trade tank stuff? Give me your thoughts.

the only reason I consider relocating the tank to the rear of my 66 truck, is because when I was in a bad wreck in my 65 truck and was pinned in and had to be jaws of life out , The tank had ruptured and I was covered head to toe in gas, luckily nothing sparked else i would of been BBQ........besides that I agree i like having it in the cab, and putting it in the rear kinda limits where to put the spare, and the rear replacement blazer tanks hang really low in the rear.... Im still running the behind the seat gas tank in my 66 at the moment..

Nothing wrong with it in the cab. Now is your chance for the 20 gal upgrade behind the seat. I have considered the larger tank just for a longer range.

Really? Who sells a larger tank, I have not seen that yet? That might be a good upgrade if it does not interfere with the seat going back all the way.

i think i have one in my truck and didn't know it. the tank goes all the way across the back of the cab. o most trucks it stops 6-8inches from the passenger side of cab.

If you have the smaller tank, there is a decent size area between the passenger side of the tank and the cab wall. The 20g tank would fill that extra space.

My wife just picked up a 61 with a tank just setting on the box of the truck. We are thinking og going bacck to the stock location. We have to find all of the parts to do this. Drill a new hole in the cab for the filler neck. Parts we need to find, tank, straps, filler neck, sending unit. Are we missing any other parts?

Hopefully the wiring is still there for the tank. You would also need the fuel line and the rubber pads the tank sits on.

I bought a 1965 c10 the other day and when I was driving it home I could here gas sloshing around in it and thats why Im taking it out.

redoing a 65 now taking the tank out and putting in back dont like the tank in the cab for some reason just dont want it there took it out of my other 65 ten years ago and it was nice having the extra space behind the seat now that i have added the power buckets out of a 01 chevy I can run them back farther with the tank out

You know, I have never heard gas sloshing in my tank. My exhaust is kinda loud so that may be why..

I still haven't heard any good reasons to have the tank under the bed. Don't know why the PO did it either.

Any additional pictures of the proper factory install from an unmodified truck would be a great help too.

Your not gonna hear a better reason than this right here from losthope, but lighter note, the vent on my gas cap failed and sloshed gas down the side taking the paint with it...sucks lol

Some people here have commented about getting rid of the "fumes".

However, a tank in good condition, with a new rubber coupler and gasket for the sender...You wouldn't get the fumes.

My old truck needed a coupler, but I never got around to change it.

Extra storage space, audio systems, leg room, and of course safety in collisions are other reasons I read here.

When the Mrs was involved in a wreck with our '66 GMC, she was unable to get out of the truck and the point of impact was right on the drivers side door and cab. Had I not removed the tank, it most likely would have been damaged. Could have been real bad. Will never have an in cab tank on another truck.

An option I've used in the past are the auxillary tanks from like JC Whitney. They mount between the bedside and frame in front of the rear wheels. Some have a filler neck in the rear, so you fill thru the wheelwell. It'll solve a couple concerns- no in cab tank, no filler door or hole in bedside, and the spare can still go under the bed in the back. This seems to work good on the long bed trucks, mainly.

I was looking at my truck and it looks like the PO removed the fuel tank mounts on the cab floor as well. Does anyone have a good picture of what should be there to mount the tank on in my cab? I might have to rustle up some replacement tank mounts as well to do my retro-fit.

Would the late 70's side tank fit on our chasis??? I was thinking about mounting one, that way I can still have the spare under the bed.

I think the above accident would have been worse with the tank mounted outside the frame. I don’t think they are a safe option.

HATE THE SOUND OF SLOUSHING FUEL WHEN I GO AROUND A CORNER! but i havent found a good resonably price aftermarket under the bed tank.

I put mine under the bed because I could always smell gas in my cab and I could never find where it was leaking from. It did not have an overflow so if I filled the tank up all the way it would leak out the filler neck causing my paint to peal off. My tires are to wide to fit under there anyways.

Something about having 20 gallons of high explosive liquid positioned directly behind me while I am strapped inside an all metal box traveling at significant speeds down the road does not set well with me.
I have my tank under my bed, and have had it there with both a stepside and fleetside bed. With a little bit of planning and some good sense you can install a working and attractive filling option without hacking your bedsides all to pieces. With both fleet and stepsides there are attractive ways to mount the spare tire inside the bed as well. I have a nice black "leather" type tire cover that goes over mine, and a bed mount that keeps it secure. Over all I think it makes for a rather attractive throwback look having the tire mounted to the side of the bed. All it takes is a little planning.

Honestly there is nothing in the world that would make me want to drive one of these trucks on the road with gas in the cab. Any inconvenience in installation pales in comparison to the idea of being burned to death in a gasoline fire after an accident. I know none of us like to think that our old trucks will ever get wrecked, but (as has been proven in this thread) it is a real possibility- and I personally value my life too much to take that chance with such a significant amount of gasoline inside a metal cab with me.
