What engine oil and gear oil?
I recently got a '69 C10 from my grandfather. It's got a '71 307 and a TH-400. The rear axle is a '70 12 bolt. It appears to have a posi and about a 3.24 gear.
The truck runs pretty good. I want to go over everything before I run it much. What engine oil does this engine need? I'm guessing 10w-30 but I'm not sure. Also, what gear lube for the rear axle? Do I need some kind of additive for the posi? I'm pretty sure the trans just needs good old Dexron III.

Re: What engine oil and gear oil?
I run 10w-30 year round in mine, and temps go from around 0 to 100+. For gear oil I use 75w-90. You need a friction modifier for posi. The trans will work fine with any Dexron; the later formulations are engineered to work in earlier applications.

Re: What engine oil and gear oil?
One more question, what spark plugs should be in this engine? I could just get new replacements for the Champions that are in it but I have no idea if they are correct or not.

Re: What engine oil and gear oil?
Might want to take a look at this thread, the manuals and a handbook are a great start.

Re: What engine oil and gear oil?
I also run 10W-30 (dino) all year and 75W-90 (synthetic) in the diffs. My Clymer shows AC R44 for a '71 307. As for brand, I've had good luck with AC Delco and Autolite, not so good with Champion.

Re: What engine oil and gear oil?
Ah shoot, I looked at the wrong model year 307, sorry. The correct AC# for a '71 307 is R45TS.
