Motor mount question 82 4x4 bb to sb
I got a truck that I am putting together for a buddy. It's a 82 3/4t 4x4. It had a big block in that p.o. removed.I am putting in a 350, my problem/ question is do I need to change out the brackets on the frame as well as the rubber engine mounts? I just swapped the rubber mounts, but it doesn't seem to sit down in the mount far enough to get the long motor mount bolts in.The right hand side is pretty close, but LHS is about 1" out.I measured the frame brackets on the donor truck and they look the same as in the 82.Tranny bolted up good, just won't sit down in mount far enough, any ideas?? T.I.A.

Didn't need to touch them. Small block and big block are the same mounting positions. We're talking chevy here they made things simple not built like ford

Re: Motor mount question 82 4x4 bb to sb
After I posted this, went back out to shop & looked at the old mounts & they are the same.I will try to loosen the mount bolts and see if that helps. Maybe the flange on the engine bracket is bent a bit so it's not sitting down right. It's one of those things I found if you walk away and leave it,things go together lots easier instead if fighting with it...

Definitly. Sometimes I put a big crowbar in between the engine and motet mount clamshell and tell the engine where to go as we lower it on the mounts

Re: Motor mount question 82 4x4 bb to sb
Went back out to the shop again and checked, the old mounts that I took out are a curious thing too.I put them back to back, bolt holes lined up,and the long motor mount bolt holes are sitting in mounts at different locations, one is about 3" down from top bolt holes, the other is about 2.5". This is strange?? I will try to post some Picts. Also looked in my Lmc book & it shows 454 as different mounts than a 350, it was 2wd 454. This truck is 4 wd that I am working on

The pictures show the motor mount bolt and holes don't quite line up. Maybe they are all like this and I've never noticed before. Will have a look tomorrow.

One side may be higher to help drain oil

Re: Motor mount question 82 4x4 bb to sb
these mounts are "new" zero miles. i cna try to get the wife to get a closer pic, but even new the rubber isnt exact, and anytime i've put a motor in you must jerk/wiggle/move the mounts around to get the whole to lign up. and if i remember correct they are the same part number for left and right |

Re: Motor mount question 82 4x4 bb to sb
Got mount to line up,loosened the 3 bolts holding the rubber mount to frame, then lowered the engine down on with a bf pry bar got things in place.I was lazy on this truck & didn't pull the front end off like I normally do,so it was a lot more of a p.I.a. Climbing in and out of engine compartment. My brother in law's father told me about 20 years ago that he always pulls the front clip & I started doing it that way too,Wwwaaayyyy easier to work on stuff!! The older I get,the more this comes into play!!!

Re: Motor mount question 82 4x4 bb to sb
The clam shels on the motor are different from 2wd and 4wd. The 4wd is more shallow and has a 3/16 thick triangle spacer between the block and clamshell. 2wd clam shells will not work due to the spacing of the k member in a 4wd. Once you have a set side by side you will see the difference, Bbc, sbc and deisel 4x4 clamshells are all the same for the 4x4 and will work. -Matt
