Octane rating for 292?
I have been having some rattling under load that sure sounds like low octane. What do you guys run in your I-6's?

Re: Octane rating for 292?
Could also be timing. Octane stuff usually is high compression stuff, like if you were running a 12/1 motor you would need a higher octane. I'm sure someone out there knows a lot more about this than I do.

Re: Octane rating for 292?
CR is 8:1 or so , so regular gas is plenty for that motor. You probably have a non working vacuum advance and have it too advanced...

Re: Octane rating for 292?
As of today I have retired my truck from DD service. I opened up my distributor and the vaccum advance looks rusty to me. It wasn't new when I got it. I think I am going to look at that as a possible cause. I am glad I don't have the pressure of using it for my main transportation anymore.

Re: Octane rating for 292?
all you have to do to determine if the vacuum advance is working is look under hood while engine is running and crack the throttle open while looking at the vacuum advance and you should see it moving

Re: Octane rating for 292?
Isn't the vacuum advance under the distributor cap?

Re: Octane rating for 292?
Vacuum advance hangs out under the base of the distributer where the cap mounts. You should see the vacuum line running into it.
