Throttle plates stuck
I finally got a few min. of down time in the body shop this week and I pulled in my swb 70 chevy to tinker and play a bit. Well when I went to start it it was hard to start so I decided that it was a good time to replace the medium duty points type dist. that it has and the two bbl and put on the Performer intake and hei and Edelbrock 600 That I have siiting on anther 70 that is going a different way when its number comes to the top of the list. Well It has set out longer than I thought and the throttle blades were stuck closed on it. I took of the top and sprayed some PB Blaster into the bores To let it sit. Any one else got any ideas how to do it? I had a thought of taking off the choke assm and sitting it ina ice cream bucket and filling the bucket with Jet fuel [kerosene][that is what I use in my parts washer]Please help!! any thoughts any body? any ideas?

Does an Edelbrock carb have internal rubber parts like an accelerator pump diaphram that may not like soaking in kerosene? I've never had one, but that is the only thing that comes to mind. I would give the blaster some time.

Edelbrock does have an accelerator pump that will go away if you soak in jet fuel. It is easily replaced though. Edelbrock carbs are easy to work on and you can replace the pump without taking the carb off the engine.
If the butterflies are sticking someone may have taken them out before. I'd losen the screws on them and close them gently. While they are closed, tighten the screws again and see if they still stick. IF you do soak in kerosene it will also swell gaskets and may cause other problems too.... If it were me, I'd disassemble and rebuild the carb. The kits are under $25 and it will prevent future issues. Best of luck buddy.

My edlebrock did the same thing after sitting for two years. I took the air horn off the carb(while it was still on the carb). Took all the removable metal parts (Metering rods, needle valves and seats, floats, jets, springs, etc...) out and soaked them in carb cleaner...
Sprayed the butterflies with seafoam carb cleaner spray from the local parts store. Let it soak for about 2 hours(while the rest of my parts were soaking and I was working on other things)... Butterflies freed right up and after cleaning all of the parts in carb cleaner I reassembled, filled the bowls on the carb with fresh fuel (after carefully soaking up all of the terpentine out of the carb with blue shop towels), turned the key over and she ran on her own for the first time in just over two years... Cost me nothing but time for now as I already had the carb cleaner and sea foam spray in the shop. (I ordered the rebuild kit from the local parts store and they still have yet to bring in the right one!!! Until I receive it she is running on her own just not 100% great yet) |

I have the the top off and the boosters and the acc pump as well as the secondary air door. The carb body is about all that is left,with the choke. I was thinking of removing the choke and setting it down in my gallon buket of carb cleaner. I have no problem buying a kit for it and freshening it up but I must get past this stuck issue. The pass side primarys are rusted coroded something terribleand it is frozen solid. I tried to move the throttle with a pair of pliers after unhooking the secondaries and still no go. The butterflies are not bradded on the throttle shafts on the Edelbrock are they? I seem to remember loosening the throttle blades onone of my carbs and adjusting the plates for a better fit in the bore. Anyway I have tried a couple of times and was unsuccessful in loosening the plate screws. This is disheartingning.

If it's corroded that bad... might wanna think about a new carb.

If it is corroded that badly, I'd replace it too.
Can you tell if any water got into the cylinders?

Well the motor that this intake ,dist and carrb plus breather came off of is not planned to be reused anyway. Although it had a little crap and crud in the intake runners the valley was remarkably clean. The motor has[had] some problem it used a good amount of oil when I drove it home from the sale I bought it from. That truck when its project number comes up is either gonna get a big block or a vortec headed small block. Also I am scratching my head on this carb deal it had only one cover where the step up piston goes. The one on the drivers side was there the one on the pass side was not. Does'nt all of those have two step up rods, one on each side?
