Windshield gasket

Just installed my windshield yesterday and now I'm second guessing myself if I put the gasket in backwards. Used the rope method and it went in quite easily. My truck didn't have a windshield when I bought it so I had no point of reference. Overall it seems to fit good, with the exception of the inside corners where the gasket doesn't lay flat against the glass. Its hard to see the popped up gasket in the corner in pictures, but its attached anyways. After seeing how everything looks in pictures I better clean the truck again. It looks horribly dusty.

Yep..Its backwards...The rounded edge should be on the outside...Goodluck..

I already told my friend that helped me put it in. We had a good laugh about it. At least I know now instead of finding out 6 months from now when its at a car show and someone points it out. That would be embarrassing.

Got mine from www.classicparts.com seven years ago..The rubber is still soft..The new windshield cracked 6months later

That's where I got mine from. Just let my error serve as a warning beacon for you so you don't do the same thing I did. I think I will wait a little while until it warms up again to make it easier out with a less likely chance of breakage. Fortunately the backwards seal seems very flexible so get it shouldn't be too tough to undo.

Is the gasket cut in the corner of the last pic? if so, I would scrap it get another one.

Okay. Just had a warm day hit us last Friday. It was about 73 degrees. Had the guy who helped me put it in the first time over and we pulled the windshield. It came out really easy. It was a big relief to have it out without breaking it. Flipped the gasket around and reinstalled it the way it should have been done the first time. Total time was about 1-1/2 hours. Went great and now looks a lot better. Here's a picture to hopefully help someone else who is putting in their own windshield. Still need to wash it sometime soon.

Is that gasket completely seated in the top center? In the pic the gap widens. When doing mine, the windshield had to be "spanked" (seriously, the old school glass guys like spank the thing to get it to rest fully in the channel). There was a 1/8th gap that had to be worked down. Reason I say this, the first time you drive the truck and the chassis flexes, it could leak or break if it isn't fully seated.

Yep, and "cup" your hand so there will be an air cushion between your hand and the glass.

I think its seated all the way around. (?) I went around the glass and the flange with a hook tool on both sides pulling the gasket lip out and releasing it. Wouldn't that seat it? The seal lays flat agains the body and glass.

well the gasket is a stepped lip, and most of our windshield channels aren't perfect. In your picture there is between 1/4-1/2 or more between the top of the gasket and the bottom of the roof line.

Here is my truck right after I had the windscreen done; its not quite as close up, but you can see almost no gap between the gasket at the bottom of the roof.

Got home from work and headed straight to the garage. Yes there was a gap at the top center of the windshield to the overhang. It was about 1/8" to 1/4" wide in the center and tight on the top corners. I pulled the lip down around the inside around the flange and glass on the inside and outside and the glass and flange were seated. I did see the double lip and the flange is definitely past it. By suggestion, I slapped the windshield around the perimeter. There was very slight inward movement at the top. Inside the cab the gasket is pressed tight against the flange recess. The gasket now is sitting tight to the overhang on the outside. Hopefully that takes care of it. Now it looks evenly spaced all the way around.
