'72 C20 402 power steering pump
Decided to rebuild my original power steering pump, this was a first time for me doing such. The pump works great but leaks fluid out the front seal and one of the rear orings on the housing. Not a bad leak but bad enough to drive you nuts.
Thinking about replacing the pump with a new or professionally rebuilt unit. Anyone have any good vendor suggestions or the one's to stay away from. Thanks in advance.

Re: '72 C20 402 power steering pump
I normally would not do this but since the leak is not too bad, try some Morey's brand power steering oil additive. I had a truck that was whining and I changed the pump only to mke the problem worse and then changed it again to creat a leak and frustration so I tried some of that brand of conditioner and not only did the whine stop but the leak did as well. I would normally call B/S on that if it had'nt happened to me and I know for a fact that it worked and masde everything all better, it does'nt cost a whole lot so what do you have to lose? Jim

Re: '72 C20 402 power steering pump
I've used the Lucas power steering additive on several vehicles- import and domestic. It will usually shut the whine off, but not always. That being said, a whining pump may run for years without incident, or it can fail rather quickly- no real way to predict that. For leaks, if the Lucas doesn't cure it, then it is time for a new whatever leaks.
Just my experience with something you can dump into the system and it is a cheap fix, if it works. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: '72 C20 402 power steering pump
I would "rebuild" it again yourself. The seal and the o-ring kit will be much less expensive than a rebuilt pump. If you are set on not doing it yourself, many of the parts houses have services that build your pump. I know CarQuest does and pretty sure NAPA does. That way you get your pump back that at least you know wasn't in a fire or a wreck. Other than that, get one with a good guarantee-maybe Advance or O'Rieleys.

Re: '72 C20 402 power steering pump
Tried adding some of the Lucas treatment without success. That would have been easy.
Thought about buying another seal kit, but that was a messy and tedious process doing the rebuild. Figured since I was not successfull my first go round I might have the same results the second time. I see pumps for sell various places new and rebuilt; though someone on the board might have some insight regarding the p/s pumps on the market. Thanks for all the responses so far guys.

Napa has the reseal kit for under $20.00 , comes with the seal and the tin can o-rings.
