Oil Filter Canister question

So I think I'm going old school with an oil filter setup on my 283 with the canister style filtration. Is there a gasket that goes between the bypass to engine block? I know someone who's got a complete assembly for sale, but it looks like it is missing that gasket. I know there is supposed to be a gasket that goes between the Canister Housing to Engine Block, I just don't know if there is supposed to be one between the Bypass to Engine Block. If there is where can I get one. My internet search only turned up a info on modern spin on filter adapter assemblies. Thanks for your time.

There is no gasket between the bypass and the block that I know of. The gasket/washer or what ever you want to call it around the bolt in the housing is prone to leak after a while and make sure you have the old gasket out of the block before putting the new one that comes with the filter in.

That particular bypass valve only comes on the engines with the
the canister filter and you still have to have on the engine if you put a spin on adapter on the engine. It has to be there to back up the adapter and also because the adapter doesn't have a check valve in it.

I think you should be able to come up with one for a lot less than that though.

I think there is only one adapter for the small block V8, any of the Chevy dealers will have one, as the new crate short or long blocks do not come with them.
Just make sure the old gaskets are removed before you install the adapter.
Two bolts and a new spin on filter you will love it!

mr48 I don't think that is the one I am familiar with.
I usually get mine from the junk yard, remove the spin on filter and un bolt the adapter!

I've never tried that with an early block and didn't think using a later spin on adapter/bypass valve would work.
The valve in the link isn't and adapter but the check valve that the canister filter butts up against when you run the early blocks and canister oil filters.

You end up collapsing the center of the adapter when you tighten the bolts and eventually crack the adapter along with not filtering the oil correctly.

Hi. Thanks for the replay. I did see that auction earlier today, I was concerned when the seller said the bypass was not in the best condition. How about this type, it's by Fram:

That is the same one I have in the listing below at a better price.

If anyone wants to change a canister filter to a spin on setup I'd highly suggest using this adapter. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...0538&ppt=C0119 It has the built in bypass valve unlike the one I posted the photo of. A whole lot less mfooney than the rip off guys want on Ebay for a Wix one similar to the other one too.

I've used the Fram ones on a bunch of engines without problems. When I worked in a service station in the 70's I remember quite a few cannister small blocks coming in for oil changes with two gaskets leaking like crazy. I was a hero for solving the mystery oil leak.
