Lets talk 6 cylinders and transmissions..........for Henry
I have a running 216ci, but the long term goal is a T5 (or similar) mated to a newer 6 cylinder.
I hear alot of people talk about putting in a 292ci. What other options are there? What is the best bang for my buck? |

Happy with my 250. Also had a 235 and it was a good runner, just make sure you get 1955 and later full pressure oil system. I had thought about tossing in a 4.3 vortec TBI motor and still telling people " it still has a 6 in it" but wanted the inliner.

It is hard to tell what the future will bring, but at this time I would really like to stick with a inline 6.

292= more frequent stops at the gas station. Also, depending on what your putting the 292 into there might be hood clearance issues as they are about 3" taller.

You should be good to go then. I am currently mocking up my 46 with a 250, but I still have a hankering for a 292. From what I have read the 292's are a little bit more to rebuild but I can't understand why really. The other thing I forgot to mention is if you are running a brake booster mounted on the firewall you may have issues with it hitting the carb depending on what kind of intake you want to use. I am having this issue right now with my truck. So I had to mount my booster under the cab.

Running a 250 and a 2004r auto OD. in my 3800 1 ton pickup. It hits the road like a dream. I get around 17mpg- and I can even pass people on the highway and run 65 mph and not get the your #1 finger. I got a dual mastercylinder bracket from Ghostrider and bolted in a dual manual disc MC. I can put your nose on the dashboard with no effort at all.

I would like to stay with a 5 speed if possible.
No booster, just running an updated master cylinder on a disc/ drum combo. What was the 250ci stock in? |

You should be able to do that easily - actually easier than putting it behind a 216-235. The belhousings and other things are pretty much a bolt in - other than clutch disc.( I actually used a later sm465- was in a 3600- but other than shifter location should not be a problem) used a 57 chevy V 8 bellhousing and modified the feet -actually sat on the stock crossmember- you can go several direction with the front motor mounts- from stock cradle like in a school bus - or after market. I think there is a thread on this site on putting the 5 speed -( like s 10 tranny) behind the six) .I know there is one on stovebolt if not here-but I am almost certain that it is on here also.
My 250 is bone stock - out of a 74 model service truck - 30,000 miles- got a steam cleaning , coat of cat yellow( what I had) and bolted in . I runs great.I am actually looking for another to play with - LMD |

I still plan on having it torn apart and rebuild it with lumps and a better cam. got me some new Davis Speed brackets for Pump /Alt Motors almost ready to pull out just waiting on getting some custom exhaust headers made. |

i have the 4.3 out of a 1988 astro in my 49, i had computer in it an all an like a fool i took the comp out an put a carb on the tbi intake an it runs great, good power an sounds good an good gas mileage

I have heard good things about a 4.3 set up in a S-10 conversion, but this truck I am looking to put a I6 in it.

The 250 that's in my 48 had 95 K on it when I put it in and I probably drove it another hundred K before it was so worn out it wouldn't run. With the Saginaw fully syncro 3 speed and Nova rear end with unknown but probably 3.0 gears it got 20mpg on the road when I first put it in. I'm thinking 5 speed and 3.73 Gears behind the 292 that is going in it.

Doesn't a 250 bolt directly to a T5 S10 trans where a 216 235 and 292 require adapters?

Go with the I6.
My '49 came with a 216 in it. I was determined to stick with a I6 in the truck and end up picking up a '70 292 about 50 miles away from me. Full complete motor that ended up being even better than I thought - $200 which was a great deal. I did look at the 235s and the 250s however I figured since I was pulling a motor I would put a bigger one in. The 292 does fit, but I had to massage my firewall a little bit to get clearance. I have a NV3500 hooked up behind it. To answer your question - there are a good amount of I6 options (235, 250, 292, 302). I would strongly recommend picking up this: http://www.amazon.com/Chevrolet-Inline-Six-Cylinde... to learn the ins and outs of the motors. In the end it didn't matter because I knew I wanted a 292, but if you are open to more ideas this book is a great starter. Feel free to PM me if you need anything. I took pictures of the installation and everything and have done my homework on them. Love your build by the way. Even started a fire in me to maybe scrub my truck with the CLR after seeing your results. J

I put a s10 5sp in my TF 235 and all you had to do was cut about a inch off the front snout
where it goes into the bushing, it uses a s10 v8 clutch assembly,, piece of cake!! |
