Possessed I tell you....
Round 6 in the saga of this nightmare.
History: 1. Bought a $7500 434 from a 'friend' because it had all the right parts, and he needed some help. Found it had exploded a gear drive and all he did was drain the crap out of the pan and change the timing set (lots of the 'right' parts were junk, lies and basically BURNED by the friend) Bored, freshened everything new carbs, pistons, cam, shaft rockers, had 11 bent valves, replaced the Eagle rods with better Lunati ProMod rods...... $5000 later it dyno tunes to 666HP and 590 ft lbs torque. Nova ran high 9's for 3-4 races then something came up and I built a bigger bullet. 2. Use the Motown block to build another Nova motor and stuff everything else in a GM 509 casting,,, adding splayed mains, short fill, bla bla,,, going through 3 blocks to find a good one,, and $2900 and the motor sat for 2 years as a 'backup' 3. 2010 I put this 'backup' motor in the truck,, in 3 passes it busted the deck at the bolt holes, pinched a piston. 4. buy Dart little M to repair the failed GM casting.... (machine work and everything ,, $2650..... less than 15 laps squirter screws fall out of carb and are injested through 3 pistons, lots of welding and repair on the heads. $3100 5. 6 passes later it looses oil pressure on the top end... MY error I tried to save a stupid $65 one piece pan gasket with too much silicone and it squeezed inside enough that the crank beats the bead off the pan rail (as a 4" stroke in a sbc will do) and plugs the oil pump. Spins 3 rods. BIG issue is the Lunati LAD-1 ProMod rods are no longer produced. Soooo going to do it right I put a set of Olivers rods in it. 6. Everything top drawer,, crank reworked in cale,, re-nitrided, rods capable of 1200HP and the short block 100% first class now,, another $3700 later.... I go to the track last Saturday for ADRA race #1. FIRST LAP OUT OF THE TRAILER.... Somewhere, somehow, from God only knows where,, a something finds it's way into one of the carbs coming out of the water,, carb hangs open and I can't get it to shut down below 4000rpm. On the brakes sliding through the beams,, damn near bending the throttle toehook I FINALLY think to hit the ignition switch and get stoped just BARELY before smacking the wall. With no idea what had happened,, what's the first thing I do,, pump the gas (dumping the nut into the intake) and fire it back up.. bang bang bang.... The 666HP MF'n SOB POS sbc is out of the truck and on the stand. Here's a shot of the edge of #8 piston looking with a borescope.. I'm not sure I have the heart to finish pulling it down. I'm done. The truck is going back to a street truck with a little pump gas 383 block I've been saving.

Man, that's a run of tough luck there... Slap that 383 in there and play on the streets for a while, who knows, you may have just as must fun cruising as you did racing!

Re: Possessed I tell you....
Things a borescope wont tell you..........
It's nothng but a small piece of lexan from the airpan!!! No piston or head damage. That nasty looking hunk in the cylinder was a little 1/4" x 1/2" piece of 0.090" lexan that was getting compressed to 0.041" Noisy as hell but lexan vs. aluminum head and forged piston,,, Lexan looses and I WIN!!! Holy crap., the FIRST bit of good luck EVER with this miserable SOB.

Re: Possessed I tell you....
Marv, seriously, while it is out, go get it redyno'd. If it makes 666 again, sell it. If it makes anything else, then your luck will change! Please do me the favor.

Re: Possessed I tell you....
It's just phonominal how much noise .125 square inches of 0.090" thick lexan will make in a cylinder when it's being compressed to 0.041" in the quench. I shut it down before it even got hot enough to melt. Had my engineer do some research and calcs and it takes only 900psi of force to make a .1" thick piecs of lexan yield and compress at room temp. It wasn't in there running long enough to raise the material temp. This is what was laying on top of #8
http://www.small-block-chevy.com/ima...xan-debris.JPG (wow big picture, lets make that a link!!!) WHEW!!!!!!!!! No witness of anything on the piston or head, didn't hang the valve open,,, I think I dodged a bullet here for sure! I searched and searched and searched for ANYTHING 'metal' that could have found it's way into the engine. Who would have thought of looking for PLASTIC!!!! When it shook the tires it shook hard enough to rattle the little brace piece out of the airpan. You can bet the replacement part will be so big you couldn't stuff it down a dominators throat!!!!

Re: Possessed I tell you....
Shaun,,, if I could sell this POS for 1/3 of what I have in it ,,, it would STILL be over priced! Just doing some rough math and I have more $ in this motor than I put into the one-off URE/Bischoff/ 17° AllPro headed 800HP motor in the Nova.

Re: Possessed I tell you....
Marv, just thinking out loud here. But if you sold your troubled motor and your 383, we might be able to put together a solid LS motor for the truck that would prove to be reliable. You could even keep your carb if you wanted too
Could either start with an iron 6.0 block and crank (which I would have to source, but will open up inexpensive but good flowing head options) or I have a alum 5.7 block/crank here. I would love to help you build a motor for that truck. Only cost to you would be parts and my local machine shop fees which are very reasonable. Give it some thought, you have my number. I'd love to see another 10 second NA LS truck on this site Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Possessed I tell you....
Dang Marv sounds like we both have engine issues! I've been fighting the same motor all year last year and I think I finally have it fixed that's why I named mine karma!!! Alot less money than you though... Glad nothing was hurt the last time but I'm with super73 on the hp dyno thing!!! 666 not cool. Good luck

Re: Possessed I tell you....
Welp it's back in the truck, nice and quiet, valves adjusted, ready for whatever new disaster it decides to throw my way!!! I'm skipping the next race and going to the dunes. Ive already shot myself in the foot to be much impact on the points this year so might as well go beat on some other piece of junk while the weathers right!

They drop 2 races here in case some cant make it . I dont agree with it , but they still do it .

Re: Possessed I tell you....
It's kind of wierd in ADRA,, you have to drop 1 race.
BUT you get a 30 point bonus for making all 10 races, 20 for 9 races, 10 for 8 races,, so I only got 10 showup points for Race #1 when this pig broke (my throwaway race ) And if I went this weekend and went out first round I'd get 20 points, so even if I dont go and make the other 8,, I'd geet the same 20 points so,,, WTF,, I can't loose and I don't even have to be there LOL

Re: Possessed I tell you....
man, me and you have two diffrent ideas about what junk isnice rail, i am with the rest of the guys you really need to get away from this dyno run, heck de-tune it or put a 25 shot on it, heck anything just get away from the dreaded 666. absoulutly love your truck by the way, probably one of my favorites on this site.

Re: Possessed I tell you....
Wow! What little pieces! Glad to hear it didn't hurt anything. I agree. Detune slightly and have fun. You could always build a (I'll probably catch some flak for this) bbc.
