Mine finally runs again
Finally for the first time in 6 years my 77 K10 moves under its own power again. I have had this truck for 17 years and I am currently rebuilding again. All started late last summer when found a rust free cab to replace my priorly repaired and rusted out again cab. So back down to frame and start again. I sold the 454 and 400 geardrive a few years and go now I am just wrapping up a 5.3 4L60e 241 swap. It started up for the first time in years Friday night. I just need a box for it and I may have a line on a locally found southern box then back to body shop. I love hearing it run again finally. I will try to get some pics up soon.

Re: Mine finally runs again
Plus I got a different set of wheels for it. I had to buy a rusted out 88 GMC Jimmy to get them. I worked out though I have the 35s listed on craigslist because they are nice but to big for my ride. Plus I got a good running TBI 350 with harness and all for my 78 crew cab dually as soon as I find a 700r4 its going in there.

Re: Mine finally runs again
That is my next project for my c10. Clean work. I am going to run a 5.3 4l60e also. Any heads up on problems you ran into would be appreciated.
Is that a pre 2005 5.3 or did you program out the DOD? Also is it a drive by wire or cable. I have a ton of questions, that I won't bug you with. You can hardly ever find a 5.3 swap because everyone shoves a 6.0 4l80 in them. Again, nice work. |

Re: Mine finally runs again
Thanks it has been a lot of work but worth it as soon as I hit the ignition switch. Its a 2000 5.3 4L60E 241 transfer case. It is set up with DBC. I had S & S performance make my harness a standalone and tune my ECM. I put the schoenfeld (sp?) headers on it. I had the PCM programmed to used the speed sensor in the 91 suburban transfer case and also use the 91 suburban gauge cluster with the electronic speedo to match. 87 TBI fuel tank and sending unit for feed the thing. Other than small hurdles it was mostly straight forward swap.

Re: Mine finally runs again
I didn't even think about using a 91 cluster. Great idea.
I didn't know if an 87 sender would feed one or not. Wasn't sure if the fuel pressures would match up. Don't the 5.3's run at 60 psi? |

Re: Mine finally runs again
Yes I used the 87 sending unit with a 96 vortec 5.7 pump. It gets the pressure and volume right while still fitting in the sender

Re: Mine finally runs again
Awesome. Thanks for the info. I am still a little bit away from swapping. My truck has the origional 305 with 53K origional miles. Bought it from a family, it was their dads who passed away. The truck drives like a new one, but it is a carb truck. I am going to drive it untill I just can't stand it anymore. It is hard to molest an origional truck, but the valve seals are dried out, so it smokes on start up, and working on a 305 top end just sucks. Thought I would start getting my ducks in a row for the swap.

Re: Mine finally runs again
One quick question... You aren't running a factory tach with the electronic cluster are you? And if so, does it work? I have a c65 gauge cluster, and want to mate it with the electronic speedo. What I am afraid of is VSS interference between the 2 gauges. I bet they do.

Re: Mine finally runs again
Thanks for the compliments guys. I got this truck from dad years ago and he redid it the first time when I was in high school. He passed away 6 years ago so it became a little more special to me.
Anyways on to the questions, I dont have a tach in it. There so guys that have done it before. I dont think there would be any problems having the speedo and tach side by side. It currently does not have ac I plan to do so someday. The factory ac compressor would not fit without modding the frame. This was my first ls swap and I learned alot from it. The next one I will change a few small things. I do like the looks of the swap also and am really looking forward to the improvment of the in the drivablity more than anything. |

Re: Mine finally runs again
Thanks again guys kinda nice knowing others like the looks of my work. I have been busy at work plus plowing my place out from an 8 inch snow the other day. Once it melts off I will get pics of the whole truck. The truck still has a long ways to go. front half is jammed and the box is still in blue fresh from Arkansas. It will be headed back to the body this fall.
Someday I would like to add a factory style tach but I have other places to put a couple hundred bucks to get it on the street first. |

Re: Mine finally runs again
Weather was finally nice enough to get it outside for awhile and clean up the shop. Still need to align the doors and fenders then pick up the hood from the body shop and get this truck looking more complete yet. |

Re: Mine finally runs again
I am having trouble deciding on which wheels to put on it. The centerlines or the leave the ultra 50/51s on it. What do you think?
