Need help!

I am trying to put the 70's tilt auto Van column into my 64. I have dissembled the original column to the point that the only thing left is the shaft. Which from what I can tell runs all the way to the rag joint. Am I supposed to cut the existing shaft and couple that to the new one?

I am lost. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You should be able to pull the whole column out in one piece. When i put my 80s jimmy tilt wheel in my 64 gmc i had to smooth up one side of the steering box shaft then it slide right on. Now idk for sure but id guess the 67-72 would go right on but i may be wrong.?? Mine is basicly the same as the 73 and up.

Did your shaft run from the gear box all the way to the steering wheel?

The splined part of the new shaft has nowhere to attach to the old shaft.

I put in the whole tilt column. From the gear box rag joint to the wheel.

Here is a pic of the new column and the old shaft, I was told this was a 1970 Chevy van and from everything I read, it should bolt right in. You can see the obvious difference in shaft length.

The column bolts right in but your gonna need the shaft off the van and the rag joint or custom make the shaft to adapt to the newer column

here is what you need to adapt it

There's a LOT more to it than than just shoving in a van tilt. You need to move the Neutral Safety Switch further down the column towards the firewall. You need to get an intermediate shaft from a newer truck. I used a special U joint to tie everything together. You will need to measure the od of the splined shaft on your van tilt and count the number of splines - I think it's a 3/4" shaft and 36 splines. I think most intermediate shafts are 3/4" DD .
Here's a great link with a fantastic write up and lots of pictures. I have an easier way of drilling for the Neutral Safety Switch tang. If you want more info just PM me for more info & pictures.

Thanks guys. I will see what I can do to get the rest of it. Or I'll just cut the old shaft and couple it.

You don't want to do that really, you want that shaft to give a little, that's why the newer trucks have the two piece columns. I'd go get the intermediate shaft from a JY and be done with it.
