New 69 in the stable

We are going 69 poor, my dad's green truck is a 69, my project is a 69, and now this one! Did a little trading for it, its a really dang nice truck. Someone spent a lot of money on a complete restoration on it. Its a little odd though, its got a built 6 cylinder in it, header, 4 barrel, pretty mean sounding little cam, it runs pretty strong! Plus its a 3-speed on the column with overdrive.

Did any of these trucks come out with a factory over drive? Check out the cluster, is that vacum gauge factory? Never saw one? Extra cool points for the tach too! The six cylinder runs pretty strong, probably as good as a stock V8 truck or a little better.

Nice stepper.

A lot of little details that most might miss... power steering, I6 tach, headers, etc.

Re: New 69 in the stable

That is one sharp looking '69. I know the vacuum gauge was optional, but I've never seen an OD set up like that. That's interesting. I'd like to know more about that. Let us know what you find.

Thanks everyone!! No changes are planned, except for maybe swapping the later model steering wheel back for an original type.

Just an attitude adjustment and I'd drive the wheels off of it.

Sweet. I like the six cylinder. Too many of these get the V8 Swap.

My sentiments exactly. I've always been a V8 man but now days I'm liking the idea of an older L6 fixed up a bit. Dual pipes and what not. I guess it's not about going fast anymore but cruising cool. Thumbs up on this one.

Yeap! Its different, V8's are a dime a dozen, cool to see they kept her stock but with a little more attitude!

I know! Honestly I'm kicking myself in the ass(have been before this truck) that I tore my 69 down, it had a 6 in it, just had a bad fuel pump. I should have just fixed that at least I could have drove her!

Yeah I'm not sure, been trying to research but haven't had much luck. It works great though!

Re: New 69 in the stable

Is that O/D built into the 3 speed tranny or is it a separate unit? Can you post some pics of it? I want to keep my 3 on the tree, but add o/d and I've looked at, I think its Gear Star or something like that. They have an electronic o/d that bolts up after the tranny eliminating the carrier bearing...

Yeah I've saw those before, but this one works off a cable like the older models, but I'm assuming it bolts on to the original tranny. I'll try and get some pictures of it sooner than later.

Hey cobra_4, that is a sharpie!

Questions, please: What cu. inch is your engine? Is that tranny synchronized in 1st gear? Chevy made both--IIRC: a 7-bolt that is fully sync'd and a 4-bolt that is not sync'd in 1st. Both are nice; just that slight difference is all I've ever heard.

Also: does the tranny automatically shift out of overdrive when accelerator is floored? feels kinda like a passing gear?

And: when under-dash cable is in one of its 2 positions, does the tranny act just like a std. 3-speed?

Again, I esp. like that truck!
Thanks,
sam

Re: New 69 in the stable

That truck is a beauty. I have been looking for something like that for my son. I have seen those overdrives on a GMC Sprint. It's GMC's version of a El Camino. Rumor has it that they work well. It's worth trying out for sure.
