4x4 conversion questions

Anyone know if a 69 3/4 ton coil spring frame can be converted to 3/4 ton 4x4 by installing 4x4 brackets and crossmembers? Better to start with 3/4 ton leaf spring frame? Any advice is appreciated.

I think it can be done but it's all up to how much you can do... diy4x.com has all of the parts, don't forget about crossmembers and mounts for the T-case and rad support. The biggest differences in frames is in the rear.

I have access to a scrap 4x4 frame with all of the brackets and x members. Can it be done with stock stuff? Better? Easier?

Stock will work... Can you just use the frame and move the rest of the truck over to it?

Exhaust will need to be redone, is this an auto or manual?

Will be auto. Frame is toast. Was used as a plow truck and frame has been cracked and welded again and again. Rivets are loose in x members....like a limp noodle...worst Ive ever seen. Good brackets though!

I removed a lot of my crossmembers and reinstalled them with Grade 8 bolts... best way to get the rivets out is to grind an "X" in the head and use an air chisel to snip off the pieces and punch out the pin.

measure twice, drill once!

I thinking of doing the same to my 67 3/4 ton. I have a complete 83 3/4 ton 4x4 suburban but havnt had time to measure everything. I did measure where i think the front spring hangers go and I think its wider on the 67 but not positive it was dark.

spring width is the same but the length changed throughout the years. You would have to center the wheel and then check the placement for the hangers.

For minor changes, forward and back, you could always use a zero rate spring to move the center pin and relocate the axle. ORD and DIY4x.com have them.

To swap the front is pretty easy, but the rear coil spring frames are different. I did this on my 70 K10. Look through my build thread.
