Who has done the 5 lug axle swap

I'm trying to find who you got your axles from, I see prices all over the place and checking to see if I'm missing anyone. All I will need is axles as I have drums etc from my current 5 lug 72 rearend but I'm going to rebuild the original 65 housing to gain a little tire clearence. I'll probably change to a 3.73at the same time, thanks in advance.

Re: Who has done the 5 lug axle swap

Look at Summit Racing for Moser axles.
They have good prices.
Buying direct from Moser is also an option.

Re: Who has done the 5 lug axle swap

I got mine from summit through eBay. Made by Moser and were $272.90 shipped to my door. Check my build thread, just installed them last week.

Re: Who has done the 5 lug axle swap

Just bought my Moser conversion axles through Summit. Very happy with them. Since you have a '65, these axles will go right in no problem. Since I have a '64, I had to change the spider gears to 30-spline.

So do they not make the moser's for the 64 or do you have to change the spider gears?

I'm not sure if Moser does it not buy I know ECE sells a kit that comes with the spider gears. Go to earlyclassic.com

Re: Who has done the 5 lug axle swap

Well I talked to ECE when I was looking into converting my '64. They did NOT sell the spider gears. I bought the Moser axles listed above plus a spider gear kit sold by Superior. Both through Summit. Worked well.

Re: Who has done the 5 lug axle swap

64 is a transition year from what the guys at ECE told me... it really depends on whether you have the 17 spline or 30 spline - their kit is only good for the 30 spline - so what your saying Bemus makes sense

Re: Who has done the 5 lug axle swap

I ordered the Moser axles from Summit and a Richmond ring and pinion, installation kit and new axle bearing/seals from Rons Machining( extremly nice and helpful). Both offer free shipping, thanks for the suggestions to all who replied.

What am I missing? The extra tire clearance? I recall that somewhere they changed the width of the rearend, but I guess I thought it was after '72. What year was the change made and what are the widths?

Also, did you already change the front to 5-lugs and discs.?

Dobler, I'm pretty sure the width change happened in '70.

Correct.... My understanding is that mid year '70, the width increased .75" each side to better match the wider front track width of disc brake set-up starting in '71.

Re: Who has done the 5 lug axle swap

As it stands (or sits), I can't pull my rear wheels off without dropping shocks and coils to allow the rearend to drop down enough. I have about a little fingers clearance between the wheel well lip. I hope the additional .75 per side will alleviate the problem. I probably wouldn't be doing this right now but I had an axle seal go this past weekend and I have to tear everything down to do the repair so I figured just fix the old one since it's out and on the ground. The repair should go a lot quicker and with less down time.

I know you already bought your axles....however when I did mine it used 72 axles and took to a machine shop and shortened mine 3/4 inch per side...cost me 35 bucks

The upside is I will have a complete 72 rear end still left over as a backup or to help cover the cost of all the parts I ordered.
Have you given anymore thought on a date to try and do the HAMB meet at Holder's? Are you going to Hoedown?

Why didn't you just redrill your stock axles from 6 to 5 lug (at machine shop)?

The stock axles are 45 plus years old and have some wear in the seal area, now I'll have everything new for another 45 years. :-)

Re: Who has done the 5 lug axle swap

With the axle being the inner race for the wheel/axle bearing, that area does tend to wear also. Any money spent on modifying worn axles would be better spent on new axles IMO. If your axles are not worn at all, then by all means modify as needed and use them, but that is typically not the case in my experience.
