Dave Chapman saves the day!
I was in the need of a relay switch for my electric fan/coolingfan, and Dave (or DWCSR) on a thread informed me he could put one together! How sweet is that! Well, he came over to my home~ even though I've met Dave before at his awesome shop, it's always nice to have a visitor from our site, and so he checked out what I was dealing with, so he conjoured up the systems below. I didn't have any idea the system was going to look so professional (for lack of a better description).
Dave provides a service that I don't think many folks on here know about, and I actually don't know all of what he does! I'm super pleased with the relay system that he made for me. It not only covers the relay for my electric fan, but also for my electric fuel pump, a relay also for the AC clutch with a diode so it won't feed back up to the ac switch, and a wire going to my electric choke! I was wondering how he was going to keep current from going back up to the ac switch! that was going to work! hm, a diode! I just felt compelled to say something about a special guy that could possibly provide something for you too! I'm thrilled to have The Hollister road company right down the street! Thanks Dave! dne' I thought this was a nifty place to mount the relay system! The fuses, not shown, will be inside the engine compartment.

Dave has helped me out with some parts too. Denee I like your relay mount, I am putting my headlight and aux. light relays on the drivers side in same fashion, your mount just saved me some thinking time!

Thanks guys, I finally did something noteworthy for a change ; )! This is as far as I've gotten. You know I didn't even know these things were fuses! lol So, I obviously mounted them to where they could easily be accessed. I ran the hot wire to the fuel pump today from the relay. I need to get a grommet for the fender apron tomorrow. Little things sure can slow ya down, and ACE is just down the street! I'm moving slow! ; )

That bank of three relays in the photo(or am I seeing it wrong) seem to be fastened to the aluminum strip by the wiring sockets that the relay plugs in to. I want to use three relays in my wiring scheme but have not found any that fasten to the bulkhead like that.

The sockets were common on GM cars from '80s and early '90s.

Correct, and I've looked at suppliers and found nothing so far in the aftermarket. Found relays with a hole and lots of sockets but nothing that will make a clean install like that. Somebody has to make them and I'm not crazy about using "used" stuff in my electrical system. Just think it can lead to a hard to find problem down the road.

I appreciate the kind words everyone. I'll try to answer questions on relays for you but but not being a vendor here I can't get into pricing of any products I make or sell. Any information given is strictly for the purpose of furthering the thread about relays in general.
First Denee it a very ingenious place to put relays I would never have thought to place them there. Because those particular relays are sealed you shouldn't have any water issues. I think Friday I can get by there and help you finish wiring all that up. Speedbump, The relay sockets are standard Bosch style panel mount or tab mount relay sockets some times called relay bases. I would try any online car audio vendor for small quantities. Most larger electrical vendors have minimums in quantity or dollar amount. These bases snap together so you can line up almost any number of relays. Don't buy the absolute cheapest one, I find the cheaper ones don't hold up to the heat as well. $0.50 bases are usually hard plastic that snaps after a while under the hood. |

I pulled a bank of relays off the right inner fenderwell of a Jeep Cherokee in my friend's wrecking yard but the install doesn't look anywhere near that good.
Those jumper cable connectors are something nice to have too.

I got some like Denees thru a local auto electrical shop. They get their stuff from PICO. The relay and socket are separate and the socket comes with an extension and hole for mounting.
Denee, won't your hood latch metal cover the relays when it is installed making it very difficult to replace them without removing the sheet metal?

Hi Orrie! If something were to go wrong, I would think a fuse would be the first thing to go, and these are mounted accessible upon opening the hood. The hood latch panel comes off quickly by removing 8? nice new bolts to access the relays. I've thought this all out; )

I like to rob relays and brackets from mid 90's suburbans with rear AC. they have a nice 4 relay holder and Bosche relays. Pick-n-pull usually charges me $5 for the whole set. They are on the rear evaporator, if you pull the right rear interior panel (snaps on), they are right on the front of the unit. I've never gotten a bad one, and have used this setup on probably 5 or 6 projects so far.
In addition to fans and fuel pump, I relay high and low beams. Makes them much brighter!

Here's a pic of my relay setup on the kids 48. these 3 are for high/low beams, and fan. Fuel pump and horn are in the fuse block.

Years ago when halogen sealed beams that fit the old sockets came available I upgraded and they worked fine for my truck and Chevelle. I am going to continue to run those and add some after market running lights in the grill.

What I'm told is that your headlights loose like 20% of their amperage through all the connections etc. in the harness. Relaying them will allow them to operate at thier full advertised candlepower. We put some H4 conversion bulbs in this one and relayed them... It is WAY bright!
