Brake Booster or no Brake Booster?

I am trying to decide on whether to use a Brake booster when I convert the front to disc brakes. I have heard it just makes it easier to push the pedal, but does not help it stop any better. My question is, is it necessary? Pro/cons? etc. I have searched around and didn't really find anything.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Brake Booster or no Brake Booster?

I dont think its necessary. I still run 4 drums manually with no issues and I stop just fine. I would rather have ABS

Re: Brake Booster or no Brake Booster?

Manual disc brakes require more pedal pressure than manual drum brakes. Since about 1950 drum brakes have incorporated a self-energizing cam feature which cause the shoes to grip tighter the longer they are applied. Disc brakes function only by direct linear force (no self-engergizing feature). This means to increase stopping power more pedal pressure is required.

That being said, I’ve driving two Chevy trucks with manual front disc brakes and the pedal pressure required isn’t all that much more than with drum brakes. Individuals with a normally healthy back will have no problem with manual disc brakes.

However for individuals like me with severe back problems, the lack of a booster can render the vehicle unusable. Over time, braking became so painful I had to quit driving the truck until a booster was installed.

Re: Brake Booster or no Brake Booster?

IMO, it is much like power steering.....it just makes your truck more enjoyable to drive.
