Any cam love for a NA 4.8?
Anyone know a cam that is worthy of putting in a NA 4.8, or should I just leave the stock one in there? Putting it in a K5 with a SM465.

Re: Any cam love for a NA 4.8?
Well, I don't have the money to spend on a blower or turbo setup, so no FI.
Goal would be to get as much out of her as I can with probably headers being the only other bolt on at this point.

Re: Any cam love for a NA 4.8?
Some use LS6 cams or even GMPP's "Hot Cam" on 5.3's and 6.0's...not sure on 4.8L.
On the other side.....with the shorter stroke of the 4.8L....might also look into something high rev'ing.

Re: Any cam love for a NA 4.8?
Thanks for the suggestions guys. I think I'll shoot off and email to both Thunder Racing and Texas-Speed and see what they recommend. Looks like I'd need to change the springs too (and maybe the push rods).

Re: Any cam love for a NA 4.8?
yes you will need to change both, I am running some factory LS6 springs, they are pretty cheap and have worked so far. I do have hardened aftermarket push rods.
over on http://www.performancetrucks.net/forums/ there is alot of thoughts on cams plus the for sale section will usually have a few deals on there.

Re: Any cam love for a NA 4.8?
do it all...cam, springs, some c-moly p-rods and maybe lightweight retainers... and then twist that 4.8 to 7k or so.

Re: Any cam love for a NA 4.8?
Not sure if that SM465 would like 7k! That 1-2 shift could be brutal!

Re: Any cam love for a NA 4.8?
With a 4.8 and a heavy K5, I would stick with something that keeps your torque down low. With a stock cam and good headers you will be in good shape. A big cam like an MS3 sounds good, but would require a good tuner, heavier valve springs, larger injectors and I can't see it pushing a heavy K5 very well.

Re: Any cam love for a NA 4.8?
Put good bearings and lifters in it....its gonna be peaky as heck with an MS3 on that lil 4.8, the power band will be interesting with a stall.

Re: Any cam love for a NA 4.8?
I guess the question that I should be asking here and with the vendors is there a cam that would help the 4.8 give a little more torque at a lower RPM given the fact that I'm using a manual transmission.

A different crank and rods will give you more torque. I would stick with the stocker.

Re: Any cam love for a NA 4.8?
I LOVE THIS!!!! People now days think that old stuff is SO heavy and that they make things lighter now. Actually, it's the opposite. Sure, certain components are lighter, but add in all the electrical stuff and it starts to add up pretty quickly. Not to mention the fact that the 4.8 makes more combined power than the 454 did in our trucks. There is something to be said for that.

Re: Any cam love for a NA 4.8?
Why not get you a bare 6.0, throw the 4.8 accessories on it and call it a day? You would be out the same money( or close).

Re: Any cam love for a NA 4.8?
what's your goal with your K5? is a weekend mudding/trail rig? Daily driver? Does it see more off-road time than street driving? When you use it for its intended purpose are you in the higher, mid, low rpm range the majority of the time? Answer those questions and It will be much easier to help you pick a cam. The ms3 is probably not the best choice, it's a high rpm cam meant for top end hp. If you are looking for low end to mid range tq I would recommend the texas speed torquer v.2 with like a 112 LSA. You running stock heads??? They have a package that comes with dual springs and push rods. A good friend of mine was driving a full size chevy extended cab with a 4.8 100 shot and a cam. It made plenty of torque on motor and was pretty quick on the spray too. You can change the internals etc if you want but a cheap easy upgrade is a cam swap. Texas speed will tune for your mods also. IT's like $150 and you send them your computer. takes 3-5 days to get it back.

Re: Any cam love for a NA 4.8?
To piggyback on that, try to source a trailblazer ss intake, that will put you a quite a bit more ft-lbs to the ground...

Re: Any cam love for a NA 4.8?
TBSS uses l92 style intake, which needs l92 heads and won't fit on the 4.8 because it requires the 4" bore.

TBSS has LS2 thus cathedral port.
07+ 5.3 trucks have 799 heads and TBSS intake. Keep stock heads, hot cam, NNBS intake. |
