4L60E Torque converter ?'S

Ok my engine wouldn't start until I disconnected the flywheel from the converter......dropped the trans and converter won't make a full turn with out binding and then unturnable? I don't think it's the trans because outter shaft spends fine without converter connected. 6.0 and trans was purchased from a salvage yard and has been sitting for about seven years till recently. I was told engine and trans came out of a 2004 chevy truck. If it is the stall any recommendations for new one?

Your converter may not be fully seated in the pump.

Sounds like the front pump is broken.
Those are the same symptoms mine had and it was the front pump.
Here's a pic of the pump and it's insides.
There's not a lot of moving parts inside it. They're easy to break if the torque converter is left attached to the flex plate when separating the trans and engine. I had mine rebuilt with a 13 vane pump.

You wont know untill you pull the pump, & separate the half's.

All '98 & up 4L60E's have 13 vane rotors in the pump. If you need a pump...'98-'04 will fit, The '05 & up like Kim57's pump will not work.

They re-built my pump for $100.00. A re-manufactured one would have been twice that because it included a new stator.
While I have it apart for the pump I'm putting in a shift kit and aluminum pistons in the actuators. I guess the plastic ones have been a problem in some transmissions.

With the pump shift kit and all the gaskets and seals I have a little over $300.00 in mine and I'm doing the labor myself.
My pump is all new inside and I did upgrade the pistons which I would recommend.
It all comes down to how confident you are in the rest of the trans being in good shape as to which way will be best for you.
I'm taking a chance on mine being good. The fluid didn't smell burned although it was a little discolored.
Good luck with it.

...is shift kit part of pump, u have a part #? I did see a couple of rebuilt 13 vane pumps on eBay, or can I get mines rebuilt to a 13 vane? How do you like the shift kit and how does it differ from stock?

It's a TransGo kit #SK 4L60E series L for 1993-2010 transmissions.
It has parts for the valve body and pump (mainly springs) and detailed instructions on what to do. There are some changes made to the separator plate also (enlarging some holes that they supply the drills for).
Says "This is not a do it yourself kit" but I never let that stop me.
The instructions are very complete and I think it can be done by some one with mechanical ability. They also have a tech line that is pretty good.
The kit was just over $50.00
It's supposed to make the shifts shorter and cure some of the factory problems with these transmissions.

I haven't got it back together yet.
It's going in my 57 project which isn't even on the road yet so it will be a while before I know how it all turns out.

Re: 4L60E Torque converter ?'S

All '98 & up 4L60E pumps are 13 vane. So this isnt really an upgrade. In fact your pump will have 13V stamped on it.

The SK-4L60E shift kit is great....I use them on All 4L60E's for under 375hp.
The most noticable thing it does is eliminate the "Slide-Bump" 1-2 shift.

At the very least Put 3-4 Clutches & a "Borg Warner" Forward Sprag in while it's apart!!!!!
8 or 9 3-4 frictions...Alto A74100CPK/057757B.
Forward Sprag...Borg Warner 29236AM.

Alto 3-4 vs Stock 6 friction stack.

Can these changes be made without special tools?
Would they be an upgrade for my 4L70?
I know it's just a little stronger 4L60 but it's what came with my LS2.

Yes, You can do 3-4's & a sprag change without special tools.
4L65E & 4L70E use a 7 friction 3-4 stack, Adding frictions is an upgrade.
