ESC badge???

I just notice somthing weird today on a truck in the junkyard - it had a badge on the tailgate that said "electronic Spark Control" I have never seen this before. Anyone know any info about this? Was this a special package or something? (FYI: ESC really sucks)

Mine had the ESC, but not the badges. It has been removed, and I have since installed an MSD HEI.
I have seen those badges, but not sure why some have them and some don't.

Just a trivial note about the badges themselves...

They were first applied to '81's equipped with the new 305 ESC engine. A total of three were used; each front fender wore one under the series/trim nameplate, while the third was placed on the tailgate. For '82, the ESC tailgate badge was enlarged to occupy the same mounting provision which would otherwise be used for carrying the "6.2 litre diesel" tailgate nameplate found on the new 6.2 engine-optioned models.

The ESC nameplates were eliminated entirely with the earliest production '83 models, although the 305 ESC engine remained available through the '86 model year. The 6.2 diesel badges remained, as well, on models with that engine.

I see one of the tailgate badges one time and thought it looked a little big and ugly. Never saw it before that, thought it was interesting.

Because Ken is the MAN! Badges were put there to show off the new "special" (POS) spark control. And like he said, they were gone by 83.

I've got the two inch badge on the upper right hand side of my tailgate on my 81. I have bypassed the knock sensor and ESC with info I gathered on this site.

Ken must really like that kind of stuff. I don't know how someone could amass that much knowlage about something so small and trivial. You must pay attention to detail my friend! I do too, but not that much! Hat's off to you . . .

Has Ken worked for a chevy dealership?? I spent many, many years as a service manager at a Harley Davidson dealership, and I'm that way about them....Not on purpose, but just sinks in somehow....

Guys, thanks for the kind words, but...

...one might suggest that no one SHOULD amass this kind of trivia! After all this kind of stuff is probably of little use to most of the people on this board. Most people here are looking for practical answers regarding repairs, upgrades, etc...believe me, I learn much more from the contributors to this forum about this "real world" material than they do from me! Nevertheless, I enjoy writing, and its nice to know that, occasionally, others also appreciate an historical perspective on these vehicles!

Anyway, I have never worked for a dealership, although thanks to some very understanding dealers in my home town, I have spent much of my childhood free time scouring their inventories and raiding their brochures. So just chalk up anything I write to a life-long love of cars and trucks, and a continuing quest to secure and digest any kind of auto literature I can find for these vehicles.

I'm glad some of you find it interesting!

Ken
