83 C10 Windshield Washer Pump Question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

OK,
I know this has been talked about before but I still can't find an answer to my problem. I have an 83 C10. Windshield washer pump doesn't work. I have 14 volts when I push the switch. Fine there. I pulled apart the pump, not seized. fine there. What I did find was that this setup is way overly complex. It is a mechanical push pull pump that relies on about five different levers and an outdated electrical switch to actually move one lever that makes it all work. Question is this. With all of the real electric washer pumps out there, is there a simple conversion that I can pull that would simplify this whole situation and just bolt up? Say, Chevy Cavalier washer and pump? It could be from a Hyundai for all I care, but there has to be a much simpler solution to this problem than what I have. I find it really hard to believe I have to replace this huge unit on top of my wiper motor just to get the wiper pump to work. Thoughts, ideas? I'm open to anything.

I believe you can just get a later 80s windshield wiper motor and get the seperate pump and bottle and wire it up to your switch

I took the piston out of mine and ran the controlled neg wire to an in-tank pump that I robbed from a 70's ford. Way better setup with way higher pressure. The pressure is so much higher in fact that i had to angle my 'nozzles' down so the wash fluid doesn't shoot into the box.

My washer pump wouldn't turn off and I tried 3 different wiper switches before I realized that the problem was't the switch, but the pump itself.

Go to the wrecking yard. Get the 85-87 washer bottle with the pump inside with a piece of it's wiring harness. Replace your washer bottle with the new one (one hole will have to be drilled unless you have newer fenders). Splice the like colored wires.

Enjoy a far better setup. Beer.

Perfect! Just the solution i was looking for. Will post up when complete. I found it very hard to believe this mechanical setup was the only solution. Thanks a million. I spent literally two hours trying to figure out the crazy mechanical setup that the 83 had going on only to give up in frustration. Will let you know. Thanks.

Don't forget that the pump leads are constant hot/controlled ground

The wires are pink and white in both the mechanical and electric setups. If you match the colors, it works. I did this on my 84 and it works great.

Every 84 and older truck I have run across had a non working washer. ElGracho is correct on using the 85 up washer bottles. Also a member did a thread on using an S10 washer bottle to solve the problem.
