Best paint for frame? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I'm wanting to get my body painted soon. Before I spend $1000-$1500 on a paint job I figure it would be a good idea to clean up and paint the rusty colored frame.

I don't want the frame to be show quality and I don't want to spend a ton on the paint for the frame.

Any suggestions what would be the best (Por15, Rustoleum, rattle can)? I used some rustoleum or somthing from a rattle can on my rear end it seems to be holding up very well so far, all I did to prep it was use a wire brush and then hose it off and let it dry.

I'm thinking maybe I'd get a gallon of rustoleum grey colored and apply it with a brush or pad since I don't have a spray gun. I'd probably also prep it the same way I did with the rear end. I think since the frame is so rough it wouldn't show the brush lines in the paint.

I also would like to be able to buy the paint I choose locally. I live in a small town and the only parts store is NAPA.

Saw an ad in one of the truck magazines awhile back for Black Chassis/Frame paint that could be brushed or sprayed on. Sounded similar to POR, but said it was mostly used by guys with BIG RIGS, giving excellent results and durability on thier tractor frames. Might ask around some semi-truck places they might know the brand name. If I can find it again, I will pass it along here. Or maybe someone else has seen it advertised too! Have you looked at any of the stuff from EASTWOOD?

i was quoted 125-150 to sandblast my frame. i'll be needing to coat it with something soon.

id go with brush on rustoleum por 15 is expensive

You can get a pint of POR15 from POR15.com for $21. A quart is only $10 more @ $31. You can do the whole frame and then some with a quart. In fact, I only used half a quart to paint everything on my frame plus miscellaneous pieces.

I painted over the POR15 on my frame because I wanted it to stay shiny, but not rust. I have about $60 in paint, POR15 and supplies on my frame and all the parts I painted it with. Unless your frame still has paint on it, you just need to brush it down with a wire wheel and paint it. I cleaned my rearend, scraped the paint off and painted it with POR15 the same day.

I talked with a guy that has built several street rods and he uses John Deere industrial paint. I am not for sure what it is actually called but it is a semi-gloss black. I have painted part of my frame with it and it looks good. It was $23 a gallon!

I used a gun. Keep in mind though I am doing a frame off restro so it was really easy to paint it with a gun.

I am doing mine with a quart of Rust-Oleum Professional High Performance Enamel. It is Gloss Black. Should do a nice job.
