HELP!!! OEM gas tank install advice anyone??

I'm putting the original gas tank back in behind the seat. Are there any tips for doing this? Putting the tank in is very straight forward, but, looking for the best way to attach the filler neck and grommet. Is there an order I should be following? Looks like I can get everything together ok, except for tightening the clamps on the hose. Should this all be attached before I put it in and fish it up thru the grommet, or just get someone with smaller hands to do it once it's in?

Re: HELP!!! OEM gas tank install advice anyone??

I just assembled mine. I put the filler and hose onto the tank per the assembly manual dimensions, with the clamps fully tight, you can't get to the clamps after assembly. Then I installed the rubber grommet to the cab hole. I lubricated the grommet and neck with wd-40, then threaded the filler neck into the grommet while lifting the far end of the tank. Only put the neck though the grommet about 3/8" and then lowered the tank into place while lifting the straps. I had my helper watching the neck so it wouldn't go too far through the grommet. It took me about 3 tries, taking it in and out, to get the neck adjusted to the right height to the tank, but start with the assembly manual dimension. If I remember right mine ended up about a .25" less than the assembly manual. I wanted the filler cap to sit close to the grommet, not up high away from it. Oh and don't forget to put your anti squeak pads in last, I snuck them in before tightening the straps.

It was tricky but not too bad. If I had three hands it would of been easier. Ha

Re: HELP!!! OEM gas tank install advice anyone??

I'm taking on the same project. Does anyone have any good pics of an original behind-the-seat gas tank and mounting hardware? Where do the straps bolt down on the back side of the tank? Can't see from the pics and don't have a parts breakdown. Where are the "anti-squeak pads"? And what are they made of? Thanks!

Behind the tank, there are two metal tabs that they go through, and hook into like a "J" or "U" on the end. Antisqueak pads are made of like roof tar paper.

Awesome drawing! I presume the tanks were the same color as the rest of the cab interior, correct? Anyone have a pic of a correct, cardboard-covered tank?

Yes, the tanks are painted the same as the interior color "fawn". I have a collection of tank strap and anti-squeak pad pics on my computer at home, so I will post them to this thread later tonight. Sorry, but I don't have any with the original cardboard. Glad you like my drawing on the pic posted. The ones I post tonight will make it even clearer.

Re: HELP!!! OEM gas tank install advice anyone??

My research showed that the tanks were plain gavanize finish. The cabs were painted in the body plant way before the tanks were installed.

Re: HELP!!! OEM gas tank install advice anyone??

As promised, here are pics of tanks, straps and anti-squeak pads that I took from unmolested trucks in the salvage yard. I looked behind the tanks to see what might be hiding and knew these pics might come in handy.

This first group is from a 1964 C10. However, I do believe it had a new(ish) tank installed.

This collection is from my 1965 C10 built in Baltimore.

Yes, you can see it in the last pic. It's the only wire seen in the 12th pic. Comes off the edge of the SU on the DS and screws to the cab back wall below the back window. The other is the feed to the fuse box.
