Does anyone run a gear drive in their engines.

I have an older Pete Jackson noisy set that I am debating putting in. I run this one years ago and it is pretty loud. Everyone kept telling me my power steering pump was going out. I also hear some say that if you want the whine then put a supercharger on and don't be a wanna be. Your thoughts?

Re: Does anyone run a gear drive in their engines.

If I'm going to have that noise, it will only be because of a blower.

Re: Does anyone run a gear drive in their engines.

The three gear gear drive is about as good as you can get. The idler gear gear drives are garbage with way to much lash.

If you can find an older positive style gear drive with just two gears that's what you get. You have to have the cam company grind the cam lines backwards and the distributor gear and distributor changed. It's old tech but it was the top untill belt drive

A good chain is fine till to 6k rpm before its a jump rope
The three gear drives are sufficient for racing with proper lash
And the belts are just the best but way out there on price

So if you want the gear whine on your daily its not going to hurt nothin and you won't be missing any power the quiet ones are what I recommend though since they won't wear you out otherwise a cloyes true roller will do the job

Re: Does anyone run a gear drive in their engines.

The one I have is a four gear setup with the idler gears. I have been really leaning towards not using it but have not ruled it out yet. I just wanted to see what others thought about them.

Re: Does anyone run a gear drive in their engines.

I used to run it in my 79 cutlass. It never bothered me then but that has been 20 years ago. I will probably just put it up locally for sale. I don't plan on keeping a carbed engine in it too long after it gets done if I have my way about it anyway.

They sound like a power steering pump low on fluid.

I would run both and don't worry about the noise.

Re: Does anyone run a gear drive in their engines.

I really looked into running a gear drive when I had my motor built but came to the conclusion that unless you're running a nice lumpy can and have the power to back the noise you're just gonna sound like you have a bad power steering pump.

Re: Does anyone run a gear drive in their engines.

I had a noisy PJ on a K5 once, never regretted a 'performance part' more. For $167.50, everybody and their brother started telling me I needed a new PS pump.

I use one, its the 'quiet' one. You can hear it, but its not super loud. Not like I have stock exhaust either...

Re: Does anyone run a gear drive in their engines.

I had one in the first V-8 I stuffed in my S-10, it was cool for about 20 minutes. The 383 went together with a nice timing chain from CompCams.

If you can't handle a little gear drive noise forget about ever owning a blower

Re: Does anyone run a gear drive in their engines.

There's a big difference between a regular gear drive and one advertised as "noisy". The regular ones aren't very noticeable except to gearheads and they make a higher pitched whine. EVERYONE notices the "noisy" ones and every dude possessing a crescent wrench will tell you your power steering pump is bad because that's exactly what it sounds like. There's no comparing the two. The most obnoxiously loud truck I've ever owned wasn't loud enough to drown out the moan of that noisy Pete Jackson. You couldn't give me another one unless I could sell it.

Wow! A little sensitive? I don't think anyone was whining about your whiny gears.
