Adjusting huck brakes on the 50
Hey all,
Should have my drums and brake shoes back soon and be able to throw them all back together on the 50 3600. Has anyone got advice on the best method for adjusting the old huck drum brakes properly. From what I gather you adjust the wheel cylinders by turning the notched disc ends in or out so that the drums fit over the shoes snugly. Once the wheel is on, it should turn one or so rotation before stopping, ie slight resistance from the shoes. I take it with this set up, you have to take the wheels and drums off to adjust?? Sorry for the basic questions but I'm still waiting on my shop manual to get across the world from the US and I have no experience with drums (or any other brake setup for that matter lol). Re: Adjusting huck brakes on the 50
The final adjustment is made with the drums on. There are 2 slots in the upper portion of the backing plate. Put a brake spoon or screwdriver in one slot at a time. All the threads on the adjusters are right hand threads. Picture how it works to establish what direction to turn each adjustment. Tighten each shoe till you get a heavy drag. Back it off about 4 notches. There may still be some drag but it will smooth out as the shoes center themselves. When you work on the wheel cyls. make sure the metal cum turns freely on the cyl. A thin coat of silicone grease helps.
