factory tach and HEI

is it possible to run a later HEI with a msd 6a and the factory tach.

Usually no, early tachs can not be used with modern electronic ignitions.

AutoInstruments in Virginia can convert them to work with HEI.

If it were me, and because you're running a MSD 6A, I would put an in-line filter in just for added protection and I am one who believes that it provides a better, more accurate signal, to the tach.

When GM came out with the HEI in the mid-70s, even they figured that a filter was necessary. All of the GM cars with HEI and a factory tach had filters. You can find this filter on ebay for pretty cheap.

Off topic, how well does the MSD work with the HEI? Does it clean up the exhaust at idle?
