Stock speaker
I have seen two different styles of mounting stock speakers. I believe the yellow dash is correct?

One of mine was like the orange one and the other was mounted in the dash behind the radio.

Re: Stock speaker
I don't think I have seen a blazer with the speaker grill in the dash behind the radio before. My pic is from a 1970 that was original and I believe it is mounted as it left the factory.

Re: Stock speaker
Thanks guys. The brackets used to mount the speaker off to the left have nuts welded to them and are mounted in behind the dash panel correct? I am missing one of those brackets. Is there a part number for them or a aftermarket one? I want to mount mine like the factory had it.

Re: Stock speaker
I believe that is how they're mounted, but its been a long time since I've messed with one. I would think you would have better luck duplicating the bracket you have on your own, rather than finding one through a part number. I don't believe there is an aftermarket one available, and they a sort of hard to come by used.

Re: Stock speaker
The yellow dash picture is of my old dash and it was 100% original. That's where the General mounted them in 1971.

Re: Stock speaker
My Blazer has the grill on top of the dash behind the radio. It was a May of 72 build dont know if that makes a difference.

Re: Stock speaker
The 72 I bought for parts had the speaker in the dash behind the radio and the dash pad date was late may 72 .

Re: Stock speaker
Both my current blazers have a may 72 build date with a single wall top and in dash speakers. My first 72 blazer I had had under dash double wall top but I'm not sure of build date. That one had CA emissions too. Don't know if this means anything.

Re: Stock speaker
My '72 Jimmy has the speaker in the dash and the parts '72 Blazer I had also had the in-dash speaker.

Re: Stock speaker
Thanks Dave!
So was the under dash speaker possible in any year of a 1st gen K5 or was this obsolete by 72 with all getting an in dash speaker that year?

Re: Stock speaker
There was just a 1972 k5 on ebay that had the speaker mounted directly below the heater controls.

Re: Stock speaker
GM was probably worried about getting the speaker wet with the top removed, so they mounted it under dash for somewhat more weather protection. And it probably was mounted to the left if the truck was equipped with air. Just an uneducated guess, since some mounts had the nuts welded to the mount

Re: Stock speaker
My '70 Jimmy had the speaker mounted in the front of the center console, I'm quite sure it wasn't original but it was very well done and even had a grill that matched the contour of the console. The grill looked like the same type as the underdash grill but was thinned in the middle and thicker just towards the ends so the grill laid flat across the front and had no gaps against the console.

Re: Stock speaker
My '72 Jimmy is similar to the orange dash. No speaker opening on top of dash. My '72 has A/C and was a 4-speed truck with a 350 V8.

Re: Stock speaker
Personal belief is the blazers with the speaker in the top of the dash are truck cowls. My 69 camaro had a matching numbers block with an odd casting number. I started researching and found it listed to be known in 8 camaros. In my research I found where it was documented by GM line workers said when we ran out of a part. We didn't stop the line we we grab a similar part. Noted the changes and kept the line moving. I doubt GM used to separate cowls for blazers.

Re: Stock speaker
My '72 does NOT have the speaker hole in the top of the dash. It left the factory with an AM radio, base model (non CST).
