Which Gear Oil???
Hey guys....I just swapped a GM 14 bolt FF 8 lug and a GM 10 bolt front into my 71 Burb, and I popped the covers off and cleaned out all old oil with brake cleaner and sealed them back up. I am pretty sure the axles call for some 80/90 gl5 gear oil....but I was wondering if anybody can tell me the pros and cons to maybe going to a synthetic oil like a 75/90 or similar??? Or if that is even recommended??? Any suggestions on brands etc. Thanks in advance.

Re: Which Gear Oil???
I run the Chevron RPM 75w90 in about everything calling for gear oil (mostly because I'm sitting on 5 buckets of it).

Re: Which Gear Oil???
Synthetics should flow better when cold and offer better protection at higher temps. Nothing wrong with dino, it has worked well for a hundred years or so, but IMO synthetic is an improvement. Can't say which brand might be better so pick one you like (I'm running Mobil-1 75W-90 and have also used Redline). Only downside is synthetics cost a bit more, but you're only looking at a few quarts that will last you a few years or so.

Re: Which Gear Oil???
Not sure if this is true or not, but I had read somewhere on the net that if you use RTV for your diff covers that synthetic isn't a good choice. Don't know why this could be, but I am sure some of you know more than I. Thanks again.

Re: Which Gear Oil???
Depends on the sealant you use. I continue to use the Ultra-grey or black, no issues with the synthetics then

Re: Which Gear Oil???
Same answer I posted in your other thread last month -- use this stuff. It's made to use with gear oil, and synthetic is not a problem for it.

Re: Which Gear Oil???
I always use Ultra Copper. (Again, because I have a bunch on hand.)

Re: Which Gear Oil???
I think proper fluid change intervals have WAY more effect on the longevity of a drive train item than the particular brand used or synthetic/non-synthetic. How many people have pulled a cover on there truck to let the green pudding, that used to be oil, drain out?

Re: Which Gear Oil???
I know cases of dino gear oil run decades and 200,000+ miles w/o change w/o failure. Makes me think it's pretty good.
I'd like to see some dino vs syn mpg data. |
