86 k20 transfer case
how do i tell what transfer case i have? the tranny is a th400. i want to change the oil in it when i do the differentials.

It should be easy to tell them apart.
The 205 is cast iron and the slip-joint will be in the driveshaft itself. The 208 has an aluminum case and the driveshaft just slides into it, like a two wheel drive transmission.

Factory is an aluminum 208. It takes atf.
With the introduction of the np208, regular cab k30, np205 equipped trucks were changed to slip yoke assumingly for continuity reasons. Whereas crew cab and cab n chassis trucks were fixed yoke. Posted via Mobile Device |

FWIW, the original 205 t-case on my '86 K30 uses a one piece driveshaft. Not sure what time period they changed that, but know it's possible. But I don't know that I've seen many 3/4 ton auto trucks that had NP205 in them so as others mentioned, should be a 208. Pictures help BTW when asking questions like this...
