Short or long water pump?

On a 1966 straight 6 to v8 swap will a long water pump clear the radiator or do I need to put a short on it?

Re: Short or long water pump?

All '63-'72 trucks with a V8 from the factory came with short water pumps. So with a short water pump, you can use all the '63-'72 truck or '68 and earlier car pulleys, brackets and components. Most guys seem to go with a long water pump for what ever reason. With a small block in the factory location, there is room for a long water pump and it's accessory drive.

Re: Short or long water pump?

My 65 had a small block with a long pump in it when I bought it, and I put in a big block using all factory mounting from a 75 truck (long pump), and both worked just fine.

However, finding radiator hoses that work correctly is a different matter. Also I'm not running a fan shroud, so that might be another potential problem with a long pump.
