GM hinges or aftermarket
Here is the issue I'm faced with. Both of my hood hinges are twisted and the rivets holes are egged out. I don't know if the hinges are GM hinges or aftermarket and do not know how to tell the difference between the 2. I have heard that aftermarket hinges will not last very long and are not worth the money. I can have the hinges rebuilt for around $150 + shipping and make them as good as new GM hinges if they are GM hinges. If they are aftermarket its not worth rebuilding them. How can I tell if they are GM hinges?

Re: GM hinges or aftermarket
IIRC GM still carries the originals.Aftermarket may be better now but the last I heard was to keep the originals rather than aftermarket since they would be in the same shape in a couple months.

Good old original Gm hinges are my only choice. Quality steel.

Re: GM hinges or aftermarket
If you decide to repair your hinges, here is how to tell if they are original.
Don't expect a part number. Every original hinge I've seen had an "H" on the heads of the rivets and the name "HancocK" stamped into the outside (as mounted on the fender) of the rearward hinged arm. HancocK appears just as I've typed it with a large H and K so it almost appears as a single large H. The "ancoc" portion is very small. If your hinges are rusty, you will probably have to wire brush the rivet heads and arms to see these marks. |
