Camaro engine for my truck

I posted this on a Camaro forum but have not gotten a response yet so maybe someone here can enlighten me

Im just wanting to nail down exactly which 305 I have. I plan on using the entire drive trane in my 51 chevy truck.

The donor Camaro belonged to my nephew who wrecked the Camaro In about 1999 with just 10k on a fresh long block. I yanked everything out about 5 years ago.

I'm thinking it's a 1984 with the L69 H.O. I was told the tranny is a 700r4. Wikipedia says that the L69 was put in the IROC Camaro's starting in 1984. Before that it was a 305 Crossfire which I think had a wierd looking Diagonal intake set up and air cleaner from the pics I found on the net. Mine does not it has the four barrel carb.To the best of my knowledge this was not an IROC. I don’t remember seeing any badges anyway. Did they put the L69 in non IROC Camaro's?? Any help would be appreciated.

Good to see you getting back to the project! Any chance you could get the casting #'s off the motor/transmission? Good way to verify...

Ok Like I said this was a long block my nephew had put in in about 1998.
The only numbers I found on the drivers side left just in front of the bell housing are as follows.
GM 5.0L G
wish tells me it is a 305 Gas engine
I found a casting number a few inches to the right as follows
14010201...Which means 305...80-85...2 Bolt Mains
I guess What I’m really asking has more to do with the other components of the engine since it looks like the block is probably use in fuel injected as well as carburated set ups. Mine appears to have a 4 barrel carb. I’ve seen pics of a 305 in an 83-84 camaro that had a diagonal shaped air cleaner and the intake has the same shape and almost looks like it has 2 carbs one in the left rear and one in the front right of the intake. I assume this is the “Crossfire” 305.
And I guess I need to know what makes a 305 an L69 H.O. Which was introduced in 1984 according to Wikipedia (for what that’s worth) and definitely came out in the IROC that year. I’m wondering if some other Camaros had it that year as well.

The 305 CrossFire V8 was dropped, The L69 H.O. Z28 engine was now available with an automatic transmission. All automatics were 4 speed 700R4 units in all models. Mine is not the L69 H.O. That was only put in the Z28

The L69 was different than the muscle car engines of the golden muscle car era, in that it was produced not solely for performance but also to meet the EPA's Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) and emissions standards. The L69 was not only one of the hottest performance engines of the 1980s, when equipped with a 4-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual transmission it had an EPA highway figure of 26/27 mpg. Of course back then this type of mpg was generally obtainable only 305l69-1.jpgwhen cruising on the highway at a steady 55 to 60 mph. Owning a L69 equipped GM performance car meant you could have a muscle car that didn't stop at every gas station it passed.

Even though all the L69s produced were identical in terms of specs (except for the SS's lower advertised horsepower), there was one area where the L69s found in the Camaro Z28/Iroc-Z, Trans Am, and Monte Carlo SS differed. This area was the air cleaner assembly. The Monte Carlo SS used a large pedestrian round air cleaner assembly with a single snorkel (snorkel was on the passenger side) painted in black. The 1983-1984 L69 Trans Am used a smaller round air cleaner assembly with a single snorkel (snorkel was on driver side) - the 1983-1984 L69 Trans Am's air cleaner assembly had a large hole on the top lid to suck air from the functional hood scoop (it had a solenoid controlled flap in the hood scoop which opened up to allow air to pass to the air cleaner assembly as full throttle was approached). However it was the L69 equipped Camaro Z28 and Iroc-Z which had the most impressive looking air cleaner assembly setup - it was a small round unit with two free-flow snorkels that received air from two large air ducts below the hood and above the radiator. However the best part was the red "5.0 Liter H.O." decal on the top of the round air cleaner lid. The 1985-1986 L69 equipped Trans Am used the Z28's dual snorkel air filter assembly.

The L69 was a bright spot in GM's performance history. Where its predecessor the LU5 merely kept performance alive, the L69 put GM's performance cars back in 15 second range 1/4 mile territory. Unfortunately the L69 with its electronically controlled 4-bbl carburetor was not in GM's future plans. The times were 305l69-5.jpgchanging and port type fuel injection was the way of future due to its more precise fuel metering capabilities allowing it to more easily meet future CAFE and emissions regulations. When the 1988 Monte Carlo SS ended production, the L69 went into permanent retirement but its performance legacy still continues to this day. And for those who are tired of the current high prices of the 1960s and 1970s muscle cars, a L69 powered 1980s GM muscle car is the smart choice. There are still a good number of nice conditioned L69 powered cars still around, most of these are still very reasonably priced at well under $10,000. And there is a great future potential for these L69 powered cars increasing in price in the not too distant future. When it comes to owning a fast 1980s muscle car, a L69 powered muscle car is one of the finest choices that you can make. Popular 1980s nostalgia like parachute pants, cassette tapes, Pac-Man, boom boxes, and Sony Walkmans may all be long gone and forgotten however the L69's legend still lives. It was the 1980s computer controlled version of the old muscle car V8 - a high-output 4-bbl V8 that was a genuine 1980s legend.

The main things about what engine it "was" to begin with concerns the Cam, heads and compression ratio. Other than that it's just another 305 among millions.

Factory FI cams don't normally have the lobe to run a mechanical fuel pump. At least the newer ones.

A performance 305 could also be identified by it's heads as what heads it has mean as much as what cam and induction system it has.

The Camaro boys get real whiny when someone goes on their board and asks questions about using parts off their "collector cars" on other rigs, It's a wonder that they didn't show up on your door step with tar and feathers. But at least you didn't ask on a Corvette board about using Corvette parts for the same purpose.

It sounds like you have the basis for a good running good driving truck that you can hit the roads with and do some long distance road burning without breaking the bank gas cost wise or worrying too much about break downs and that is pretty cool in my book.

Yeah that really is what I'm going for. Just a dependible daily driver and something I could take a medium range road trip such as out to the Denver area

As for the cam and stuff you are right on the money, It's a plane jane LG4, running a mechanical fuel pump. As long as I can get somewhere around 16 MPG or so I'll be happy. It's mostly going to be driven about 10 miles each way to work. When the weather is bad or cold (40 or below). I ride a bike about 8 months out of the year give or take.

Oh BTW I posted a big howdy and posed almost the exact same initial qestion on that Camaro site's new members page as I did here. I got not a single response. I might as well cancel my membership there LOL
