1955 Single barrel Carb Float
Just cured a fuel problem in the 55 carb, has a pin hole and filled up with gas and "sunk".
Where can I find a new or good used brass float for a carb???

Re: 1955 Single barrel Carb Float
I would try to clean all the gas out then try to sweat some brass onto the pinhole?

Re: 1955 Single barrel Carb Float
Or bush a light coat of JB weld around it has worked for me. I purchased my last float from an online source for the 55 wagon/235. You might try Brothers ( they are sponsors here)

Have you checked to see if there is a carb rebuilder near by.I have one in my area and have picked up small parts there when I needed them.If its possible solder the pin hole.

I will send you a PM with the info . As noted above. I did think about sweating more solder, but the presence of gas told me not to put a flame on the "little bomb" !!! So to get back in service I used as noted J B weld and re adjusted the float level to compensate for the weight. I think I can live with the J B weld until the float arrives, Thank You very much for the help.

Re: 1955 Single barrel Carb Float
Brass used to be the final answer for long float life but with ethanol in today's gas the brass float is not so good. Ethanol tends to corrode metals and in a carb, where steel aluminum, and brass are present, the float can actually become pitted in multiple places within only a few years. If you find a source for a foam float you might want to pick it up. Otherwise keep an eye open for spares.
FWIW you can fix a brass float safely with solder. The first trick is to get the gasoline vapor out. A combination of heat / cool cycles works very well. One very safe way if you have the time is to put the float on a piece of black cardboard and set it in the sun for a few days. Gasoline is heavier than air so put the pinhole facing down. Expanding air in the float pushes gas out during the day and in the evening when it cools it draws fresh air back in. A low heat light bulb can be a bit faster. 14W or so, like a compact fluorescent works ok. Warm the float for a bit then allow to cool. Again, put the pinhole facing down. If there's liquid gas inside I'll sometimes drill a very tiny hole in the end opposite the hole to aid in draining. When soldering, use a gun or iron vs open flame. Prep correctly with flux and use acid core solder. Warm the float some before applying the solder to prevent expanding air from blowing the solder out of the way. Use a small diameter wire and be sure to put enough solder on the hole so it doesn't get sucked back inside when the float starts to cool. |
