Trans Swap
Ok, I have a 66 C10 with a 250
I want to swap it from the Saginaw 3-speed to an auto trans but I don't know which I should get. I want to do as little modification as possible and I am keeping the 250. |

Re: Trans Swap
My opinion would be to install a Th350 trans. I believe the short tail shaft version will allow you to use the same driveshaft length, but might have to change the front yoke.
You'll need a flexplate for the auto(available at any parts store new-not expensive) a starter for the same application as flexplate(it'll bolt up to the block, instead of bellhousing as with 3 spd), trans cooler lines, and a cooler, if radiator is not set up with one, and you'll need a shifter(floor mount would be simplest) I'd locate parts for about a 1976 c10 2WD application with the 250/auto combination-should all be readily available stuff and not too expensive to buy new. Just my input- I am sure others with good info will chime in, too. Glad to see you hangin with the 6 shooter! |

Re: Trans Swap
Thanks for the info. The driveshaft was what I was most concerned about. I get to restore this awesome truck while I'm in college.

Re: Trans Swap
tincan said it right. that's about all you need. th350 should be fairly cheap now that everybody wants overdrive.

Re: Trans Swap
What would be the benefit of a newer 200r4 or a 700r4?

Re: Trans Swap

Re: Trans Swap
The addition of a wire to the brake light switch and a cruise control brake light switch to control the torque converter are the additional changes. Just installed a 700r4 in my 63, the drive ability improved immensely. A 200r4 is nice behind a 6 cyl, it's lighter and the case is a little smaller. My truck had a th350 you could watch the gas gauge move, not anymore, never checked the mileage with either trans.
There are differences in years of trans but they will all work. I'm not a pro but give me a holler, easier to explain verbally. 920-387-0057 |

Re: Trans Swap
You will need to remove the crossmember under the bell housing & put one under the rear of the trans.

Re: Trans Swap
It makes sense, the only work that I was concerned about was the driveshaft and the cross member. My only concern is that I will be doing this in a parking lot and I don't have all the tools I would need for much custom work. Can I get a bolt on cross member?
