transmission questions
ok fella's
here is a few questions for you ...that I should've asked a while back ...but now for some reason are not clear in my head lol.. anyhow, ive been thinking of dropping in a 5 speed in my ol bucket ...so I can have overdrive while on the freeway and what not. now heres where it begins ...I happened to score a 5 speed out of a 88-91 chevy v8 truck... for some reason I could've swore I read somewhere , sometime that these trans will bolt right and go right in. but for some reason im thinking I might be wrong here so my questions are, will this thing bolt right to my motor which is a 75-78 chevy 350? will I be able to use the manual clutch out of my 4 speed, that currently resides in my ride? will my drive shaft have to be cut down and rebalanced? any other modifications I should be aware of before going at it? any suggestions or help will be greatly apreciated |

Re: transmission questions
Hey sixTsix yes it will bolt to ur 350 Engine, I'm not 100% sure about the manual clutch but I would go with the hydro.clutch.. I'm sure some one else will chime in on this...

Re: transmission questions
If the 5 speed you're looking at is a T5:
It will mount to your 4 speed bellhousing. Your manual clutch linkage will work, but you'll need to get a new clutch - the T5 will have a different input shaft spline count. You will need to shorten your drive shaft. You'll need to move (and possibly modify) your e-brake crossmember. If the shifter is located on the tailstock (probably not since it's coming out of a pickup - s10?) you'll have to cut a new hole in the floor. You're speedo might not be completely accurate. I hope someone will jump in and correct anything I've gotten wrong. I had one behind a 350 in my '63 and it was a blast. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: transmission questions
Out of the 88-91 full-size truck it should be the 3500. I'm dropping one of these in my 65 short stepper. My truck had a 350/TH350 combo and the driveshaft is now 3" too short. I'm going with the Hydro Clutch set-up. Member TR65 here has a great write-up on the Hydro clutch install.

Re: transmission questions
sounds like its going to be a interesting swap to say the least.
im not sure as to which model it is ..but it did come out of a 88-91 fullsize... I will have to research once I get a chance ...have been busy at work and not getting home till dark . as far as the cross member, it isn't stock anyhow ...its more like something someone threw under it to make it drivable ..and after a few looks at it ...im not sure its even 100% safe at the moment ..all though it does drive without a hitch. speedo don't work as it is ...so that's not a problem ... I appreciate the input fella's ...I don't know exactly when im going to be doing the swap ..hell to be honest I was happy to get this one ...best part about it ..it was free ...cant be free with a stick. I do plan on going through it I was told it was out of a running driving truck ...but im one of those types of guys ...I don't trust anything till my hands been through it ..or have seen with my own two eyes. I have ran thru some of the gears and seems to shift ok ..but again ..I haven't even really had a chance to look at it yet ...it was brought to me in the dark ...and I haven't been home before dark since I got it ,...so I guess you could say im in the dark about this at the moment ...lol .. as soon as I get a chance to give it a beter look I hit the thread back up and let you guys know what I can find out ... |

Re: transmission questions
From what I understand, the NV3500's are quite difficult to rebuild. They require a special fixture, and most trans guys around here won't touch one.
