Re-wire 65 c20
Hello to Everyone I currently bought a 65 Chevy c20 the wiring is a mess though I would like to re-wire the truck and the kits I have found run for over 500.00 thats how much i paid for the truck. any help on the re-wiring of my new toy would help me out alot. thanks. i beieve I will have to start from scratch. i am new to both the 65 chevy and new to this site. thanks

The kits are worth the money. American Autowire Classic Update series is one of the best kits out there for supplying everything you need.
You can buy some kits online for less than $200- but by the time you finish buying the parts you will need to complete installation, you will be at about the same price. Also the off brand cheap kits have little if no warranty and no one to contact if you have a concern. Rewiring is not complicated, if you have quality parts to start with. It is an investment in the restoration of your vehicle. It shouldn't be looked at as any less of an important part as anything else. |

Hi,
I just got my truck as well and my wires are also a mess. I went on "The HAMB" and a lot of those hot riders over there use and love "Rebel Wire". One of the guys on the forum is an authorized dealer. Contacted the guy, told him what I had, and he recommended their "9+3 series" the harnesses are all made in the USA as well, which is cool. They give 10% discount to forum members (The HAMB). I am gonna run Just standard stuff on my truck. No power windows or door locks. I do want a power source for my phone, a/c in future, and an extra circuit should I need it. He also recommended a dash gauge harness which has a pig tail connection for easy plug/unplug from fuse box. Total for me with discount and shipping from Connecticut to socal was $212.00. I felt more comfortable buying The Rebel harness because so many guys have used it and love it. They say the customer tech support is great too. Hope that helps-josh Posted via Mobile Device |

I agree with fojizzle- the Rebel Wire stuff is good and great people to deal with.
Most of the installs we do- we replace everything, we kind of have to-if we didn't our customers would not be impressed if an ignition switch failed after paying me to rewire their car/truck. When doing your own, you can cut a few corners, but my advise and opinion is do it once and be done. One thing I forgot to mention when rewiring these trucks- Save the harness that goes from the wiper switch to the wiper motor and the harness from the heater control to the blower resistor and fan. These do not normally come with any kits- but they can be purchased separately from other vendors. |

I think even american autowire doesn't include the ground wires/pigtails....which includes the aforementioned wiper motor and heater control harnesses.

The only wires mine didn't have was the + and - from the battery and the needed ground straps between the engine and body and frame and body. It did come with the wiper harness and the heater harness, both of which can be configured a couple different ways. I'm so glad I went with the AAW classic update kit.

Most of the "update" kits will convert to an internally regulated alternator. They are cheap, and it's an easy conversion.
Check your installation manual, it may have info on retaining the original setup if you choose to keep it. |

I have finally finished installing the new harness my rear lights turn on but not my brake lights what could this be. I have already changed the brake switch

On the connector going to the steering column- check to see if you have 12v+ at the white wire when holding the brake down. If not-check the orange wire at the brake light switch for 12v+constant and the white wire coming out w/pedal pushed. If that checks normal, check for 12v+ at the yellow and green wires at the steering column connector w/ brake depressed. If the white wire tests "hot" at the connector and the yellow and green do not, you possibly have a bad turn signal switch.
Do you have turn signals on the rear? |
