newb needs advice

this is the nicest first gen I have found in 3 weeks for under $8k. I know pics only help so much but do you think I should buy this or should I pass.

im needing a daily driver. I traded off my 2011 f150 scab and my wifes 2008 Pontiac torrent for a new 2013 Tahoe (for her). we are about to move to phoenix. I start school at motorcycle mechanics institute in October . im going through their Harley program. the VA is footing the bill. ive always wanted a 60-66 c10 since before I had a license.

I currently am driving a '03 Cadillac deville I picked up at an auction. it needed some minor work to be road worthy. now that ive been drivng a car for the past 3 weeks Im having withdrawal from not driving a truck. I figured id be fine after I traded off my truck but my life feels empty.

im worried I might jump into a P.O.S. since its hard for me to control my desperation. im in need of a 2nd, 3rd, etc appinion on this '65. should I pull the trigger or should I pass?

sorry if I seem to be rambling. this is my night to work 3rd shift and I think I may of consumed too much coffee.

It looks like an older restoration, and that's not a bad thing. If the engine is in good shape, I'd say go for it. (I love spending other people's money!) You could not build that truck for that little money. Worst case scenario - if it needs a new engine/drivetrain/tranny then you'll spend another $2K or more depending on what you choose. I love that it has A/C (hope it works). Keep us updated as to what you do.

Yes, that's a very clean driver for that price, AND it's not so nice that you don't want to drive it. AC is a bonus. I'm not a fan of white vehicles, i don't think they "pop", but for some reason i keep ending up with them....anyways you could part it for more than that i'd bet. If you like how it speaks to you, go for it, those things run forever and if something dies you can bolt just about anything in.

It looks pretty solid, I got mine from Oklahoma and it wasn't rusted too badly but it looks like a good driver quality and excellent start to your dream truck. Good Luck

I'd want to check the usual rust areas with a refrigerator magnet before signing up. White paint covers a lot of sins, and most vehicles at a classic car lot are listed for at least twice what they are actually worth. Perhaps not so much in a plain Jane truck, but I'd still be cautious. It is a long bed stepside. Although there are loyal fans of this style, generally it is considered the least desirable of all the available types, and it also has the wrong rear fenders. It would be interesting to know if someone just preferred these fenders, or the whole bed was changed for some other reason. I'd want to crawl underneath and see that the attachments all look correct and solid. Having someone follow you on a test drive would also confirm that it doesn't dog track, which could indicate a bent frame.

If the layout suits your particular work needs it might be a good value. I'd just suggest a good analysis and try to leave your enthusiasm in the parking lot when you go in to inspect.

I completely agree with Markeb01, I used to work at a dealer and when someone came in all Pumped up on a vehicle, you basically had them at full price.

I would get a couple ads for other trucks and take them with you, crawl all over it and point out the issues you see. Then if your still interested, make an offer and tell them you are basing you offer on other ads for similar vehicles. I definately would say the fenders aren't proper, that should knock off at least $500 or more.

If you have cash, that will speak volumes! That truck to me is about a $5k retail truck, its nice but the fenders make it look hobb knobbed.

I go it for $4800. the paint is terrible looks like a spray paint job. tons of paint streaks I see some rust spots through the paint but no cancer that I found. the breaks are bad too. if the peddle gets pushed to the floor it still takes some time to stop. the engine was rebuilt 1700 miles ago but it leaks some oil. the hub cabs are all dinged to hell. same spray paint job. my budget was no more than 5k and I was surprised I got it under that. I don't know if its disc or drum brakes. if they are drum im thinking of the disc conversion as soon as possible

I like it. Looks like a single master cylinder, so I bet you have original drums all the way around. If you have a weak pedal it's a good chance you have a leaking wheel cylinder. Not really a big deal, just some time.

I don't care what anyone says this truck is big pimpin old school style. I love these old trucks. this is one is my first. its a 3 owner. was passed down 3 generations of in same family and now I get to own it. ill post some pics after I pick it up today.

Depending on where it's leaking you may be able to see on the backing plate, but you may have to remove the drum to see anything otherwise..Vernski

Fill the master cylinder up with fluid, and pump the brakes real hard. Then look and see if you see fluid dripping out of one of the drums at the bottom. Sometimes they will leak and you can't see it.

Replacing them is not hard, but will be time consuming if the bolts / fittings / etc end up frozen due to time and rust.

I just did a flush on mine, replacing some parts. It's in my build thread, it might help a little. I'm okay at this stuff, there are many that are better.

No need to thank me for my service in the Army. I did it cause I was born to do it and if I hadn't of gotten hurt in my 2nd roadside bomb id still be doing it now. That was Gods decision to end my career but that's another story for another thread. I'm just happy to be alive and enjoying life in our great country. I'm going to pick up the truck at 10pm okla time. Won't be able to post pics till tomorrow.

You better start a Truck Fund/Savings Account now because once you start tearing into it you can go crazy way too fast. If you redo your drum system you will probably spend about 600.00 dollars on it because that's what it cost to do mine. Drums should be fine where your moving to, little if any rain and having a putt along motor doesn't really make enough power to warrant it.
I think doing your brakes and making sure your A/C is in perfect working order should be the most important things. My uncle lived in Yuma which is a little further south and at its hottest it was 122 in the shade.
