My build at 15 years old
Hi everyone my name is Joe and I am 15 years old. I love working on anything with a motor and had always wanted a 67-72 Chevy from the time i was very young. This past memorial day my dad and I picked up our project. The owner had bought the truck about 8 years ago in Arizona (we live in Michigan) and drove it for a few years and then he decided to start a restoration. He took the cab, bed and front clip off the frame and stopped because of numerous surgeries and it was too hard for him to work anymore. The truck was a 1969 C20 longbed with a 350 engine and 400 trans with factory air, powersteering, and powerbrakes. The truck had very little rust on the rockers and cab corners but that was the only rust on the whole truck. He had wanted to make a shortbed truck when he was going to restore it so he bought a 1968 c10 swb frame and bed from Oklahoma. I only wanted a shortbed truck so this made the deal. I bought the truck with my grass money and the project began. Our plan was to build a swb truck lowered a few inches with a fuel injected 5.3 or 6.0 vortec with an electronically controlled trans. This will be my daily driver once I turn 16. Here are some pictures of when we brought the truck home in pieces.

Re: My build at 15 years old
Looks like an awsome Father/Son build with a great foundation.
Congrats! I have to ask, is that grass $$ from cutting or selling? Posted via Mobile Device

Re: My build at 15 years old
Welcome to our addiction,
Sounds like you have a project to get in the middle of. With what your describing your building a truck out of two. So my main suggestion is go find out your state laws now about how to legally do your truck. I figure your taking the cab from the long bed and installing it on the SB frame. It's doable, just make sure before you spend to many hours and to much money on it, that when it is ready to go it is legal in the eyes of the state. Keep receipts, titles, from the sale of the truck and frame, and all other major components. When it comes time to get it checked out you have a paper trail that supports your situation. Been there done that, and had to redo enough to make it legally correct. Good luck |

Yeah, the truck and shortie frame are great. But to be able to work on this project with your dad? I'm just wishin' I would'a had that sort of thing going with my scotch-gulpin' padre. Makes my heart soar to see that you do with yours....Also, to have a squared away young person interested in this ride gives me way more hope than before I read your posts. Thanks for that from an Old Guy.

Re: My build at 15 years old
Next we started stripping down the frame completely and then we painted it with POR 15. This paint is awesome!
We mounted a 16 gallon tank for fuel injection in the rear frame. We assembled the front end with all new parts and 2.5 inch drop spindles the stock height springs. Started running some brake line too. |

Re: My build at 15 years old
Next we installed a 3.73 richmond gear and an eaton locker in the 12 bolt rear end.
All the work on the frame was done. Next we set the cab on the frame. We bought a 6.0 vortec engine and 4l80e trans from justchevytrucks.com in Maine and had it shipped here. We painted the firewall black and dropped in the motor and trans. |

Re: My build at 15 years old
Love the build and the direction its going. Did you have clearance issues putting the steering box on the chassis? You shouldn't need those spacers between the box and chassis. Look forward to following this one.

Re: My build at 15 years old
There is a clearance issue and I am not sure why. The old box was shimmed as well.

Re: My build at 15 years old
We started building a 2.5 inch dual stainless exhaust with dual Magnaflow mufflers.
This is the crossover right before the transmission crossmember. The pipes go over the crossmember. The pipes then go through the next crossmember into the mufflers. Last edited by 1969shortbed6.0; 08-12-2013 at 03:12 PM. |

Re: My build at 15 years old
The fenders are mounted.
Grilles mounted. This is how the truck currently sits. This is what we have gotten done in just over 2 months. We have done everything except the paint and sandblasting. I am having a bunch of fun but I can't wait to get behind the wheel! It is lowered 2.5 inches in the front and 3 inches in the back. I am planning on running a 17 or 18 inch wheel. The interior will be all original. The motor is a 6.0 LQ4 with a 4l80e trans. Our plan is to have the truck on the road before the snow flies. More pictures to come!! |

Re: My build at 15 years old
Wow! Reminds me alot of my dad and my build (truck in sig and pic to the left.)
It was an awesome experience, and made my father and me even closer. It's something I'll always look back on and cherish with great pride and gratitude. I'll never give it up, and will pass it down to my sons.
