How can I identify the sheet-metal on my truck as being OEM or Reproduction?
How can I identify the sheet-metal on my truck as being OEM or Reproduction?
I can tell the paint is fairly old and worn, original? I don't know, but the panels line up like pooo, so I was curious if there might be some identifying marks or #'s on fenders, hood, etc... that I can tell? Thanks Guys! :-) |

I am sure there are ways to tell, but the gaps probably isn't one of them. These were built as trucks and the tolerances from the factory were not great. Couple that with the fact that dies were used until they were worn out, and you will have factory pieces that are going to measure slightly different.

Just take a hammer and give a panel a pretty good whack. If it doesn't dent, it's probably original...
Sorry, couldn't resist -but probably not so far from the truth!

If you ever look at the top of a GM fender (outside edge) near where the hood hinge bolts, you will see stamp marks in it that the aftermarket fenders don't have. Unless someone has filled them in, they are very obvious.
As far as the hood goes and the rest of the aftermarket parts, they are usually lighter in weight but that is hard to tell when it is bolted on. |

Spot welds look different from original to aftermarket.

Many reproduction parts are the same gauge as OEM and weigh just as much. I'd say if you can't tell the difference,it doesn't really matter
