sssoooo, I guess I went too low.

So I finally got around to doing my front disc brake conversion along with some drop spindles. I got the spindles off of craigslist and the guy said they were "2 drop spindles but they looked like more to me. Anyway I put it all together and the tires only have like a "1/2 of clearance. I tried to take it around the block and it was hitting getting out of the driveway. I have the stock springs that came from the 78 donor. I'm thinking of putting those in and maybe taking a coil or half a coil off. Right now it has the stock springs with one and a half coils cut plus whatever the drop spindles are. I think it may have dropped the truck "3 so I guess they're "3 drop spindles. My other option is putting the stock 78 spindles on. What do y'all think I should do?

I wish I could leave it this low and lower the back a little more. I love how low it sits just wish it would rub.

What's it rubbing on, the inner fenders? If so, pull them off.

Re: sssoooo, I guess I went too low.

Yeah it hits the inner fenders but it hits right where they bolt to the outer fenders so it looks like if I take the inners out it'll still hit the outer? Also what would I do about the hood hinges?

Re: sssoooo, I guess I went too low.

too low? what is that exactly?

I tubbed my inners and cut the fender out to the hood. You can try pulling the inners and giving the uppers a couple camber shims, camber scares some guys but I promise it wont wear uneven unless the toe is off

That's strange, I have 3" drop spindles with bags and even with it as low as yours mine has never rubbed. Must be the tire height difference.

Re: sssoooo, I guess I went too low.

Part of the rubbing problem is most drop spindles space your wheels out 3/4" on each side. I'd leave them in there and try the stock 78 springs and trim accordingly to get the drop you want with no rubbing.

I agree but there's no way I can drive it like that. Does yours not rub? What size tires are you running? I don't want to cut up my fenders really.

Re: sssoooo, I guess I went too low.

I'm running the same size tires, 235/70-15 but on 8" rims. This is about as low as I can drop mine without tire rub on sharp turns, like parking, but it doesn't rub in normal driving at all.

I think you should clearance what it is hitting and lower the back to match. Maybe a bit smaller tire on the front??

Re: sssoooo, I guess I went too low.

Those nearly 50 year old springs are probably sagging a bit. An original eq. replacement should run around $100.00. I would not waste any time with 1970's springs as they are just as worn.

If you used a 3" drop spindle, you will still get a three inch drop. New springs will restore the ride & handling.

I had the same problem when I did my drop spindles. My original eq. springs only had 80K.

They are Summit Legend 5's, I don't remember them costing this much though, seems like I caught them on sale...

Re: sssoooo, I guess I went too low.

I might order some two inch drop springs. Probably gonna put the 78 springs in it to get back on the road.
